In the early days of Unix, there was a [fortune] cookie routine that would spit out a line. Most people had it in their login script.

I think that most, or all, distributions of Linux still have it. Just type "fortune" at the command line. I always took out the fortune in my login script. Too annoying.

They still have it or most Linux I have used do you just do not see it now because most system boot into a GUI. I run Slackware mostly and I still login the old way and have to type startx so I still see those little bits of wisdom.
