A 'Recovery' Like No Other
Fox News ^ | December 13, 2010 | John R. Lott Jr.

This is the first entirely "temporary help service" job recovery. Our current "recovery" might be in its seventeenth month, but the few new private sector jobs have come from companies temporarily hiring staff on a contract basis. What were once jobs reserved for people hired to cover seasonal demand or permanent employees on sick leave have become the standard employment for many workers. Companies simply don’t want the risk of hiring workers that they might soon have to get rid of.

Since the recovery started in June 2009, the total number of private sector jobs has increased by 203,000. But these weren't "regular," permanent jobs. Indeed, permanent private sector jobs fell by 257,000.

"Temporary help service" jobs is what made up the difference, as they increased by 460,000. For all sectors of the economy, including government jobs, the drop in the number of permanent jobs during the recovery was even worse -- a drop of 561,000.

The trend has recently been getting worse. . . . .

This was predicted as soon as Obama was elected. With everything Obama and the Democrats were promising in 2008, including “card check”, mandated employee benefits, and increased labor regulation, why would anyone want to hire a permanent employee when a temp or a staffing agency can do the same job?

This doesn't surprise me.

As a small business owner temporary help alleviates many of my problems.

I don't have to prepare payroll, I don't have to have a HR Department, I don't have to spend time worrying if the person doesn't work out how to deal with that crisis, I don't have to worry about unemployment benefits if I have to lay them off because of lack of work, no health insurance worries.

If the person is a gem I can then decide if I want to add to my family of workers.

I wonder what the Obama krewe will do to make this avenue less appealing to us?

These jobs are all that’s out there. The trouble is, there’s now too many of these companies and not enough of even THESE jobs. I get 3-4 calls a week from these people telling me that they have this great opportunity for me and we’d like to send your resume over. So they do, I come into their office, meet with them for 15 minutes, and then you never hear back. I know I’ve applied for the same job 3 times in one case. There’s a lot of recruiters out there with nothing to do but waste people’s time.

You will see more temps jobs even when the economy recovers. More and more companies like this cheap labor. A friend works for a large Fortune 500 company. They have been hiring the production staff for years this way now they are doing the same for the white collar workers.
Welcome to a race towards the bottom.

Welcome to France!

Temp staffing has been very hot in France for many years, since the mandated level of benefits are so high and the layers of job protection for full-time employees are so tight, almost no one will risk hiring anybody on a full-time basis.

I know people in the temp staffing business here who are currently so busy their heads are spinning.

“...If the person is a gem I can then decide if I want to add to my family of workers...”

Says a lot about how you treat your people. Hope your business thrives, brother. God bless.

Already seeing it. My former employer offshored a bunch of positions and now they bring on temps. I worked for a bank and one that took TARP money too. Nice country.

I’m currently making my living temping, after 30 years as a legal secretary...no jobs out there besides temping.

How about imputing employment status to a long term temp? They'd become a "common-law permanent employee."

I know of many folks who are working for the employer who laid them off and they are working for cash cash.

paying taxes? I doubt that.

It’s pretty widespread, also.

Uh.....o.k.; I’ve tried to go along to get along and I have no desire to insult anyone but this article is historically inaccurate to the point of being entirely........wrong. If we think carefully back to the last, say....3, recessions, we’ll note two things consistent with the recoveries had from all three; 1) employment is the last of the lagging indicators; it’s the “tail” of the 747, it get’s off the ground last and 2) all three have seen the temp help lead the way out of the last three recessions. I was hired on as a temp worker at the near end of the last recession and then hired on permanent 6 months later.

I quite well remember many of my friends and associates thanking the Lord for Temp hire firms during the last couple of recessions. They couldn’t find full time, but kept the roof over their family’s heads by doing temp work. In fact, if I remember correctly, several new “startup” temp firms were started during the last several recessions including Accountemps.

From this point forward, ask any recruiter who calls if they own the requisition. If they don’t, they are a recruiter of poor repute & you should move on.

I thought it was just me but there seems to be more recruiters than ever.

Some very sobering stories posted here. But when you think about it, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. There was a time in this country's history when "temporary work" basically described about 99% of the jobs available to anyone other than people who owned their businesses.

This comes as a tough wake-up call for a lot of people, but the reality is that the post-WW2 period has really been the exception in U.S. history, not the norm.

I know a girl who got laid off from a new job just seven weeks after she started it.

She quit a much higher paying job (at another company) to take this lesser paying position, in order to have hours more favorable to a parent with young kids.

Her supervisor basically came to her and two other newly hired employees less than two months after they were hired and said “Sorry, but we misjudged our budget. Today will be your last today.” And he handed each of them a box for their belongings.

Do they have any legal recourse in this matter (it’s in Ohio) or likely not?

All the small and med sized business owners plus people with money I know on election night had one thought - what do I need to cut to survive until 2012 or really early 2013.

NOTHING will improve until he is out of office.

This is what happens in third world countries.

Blame drooling idiots with cable and sat TV because ALL of TV supports Obama and keeps him in power. They never say anything bad about him. I cancelled it over a year ago. TV is evil and Al Waleed’s Fox is not really any better.
