SEOUL: A North Korean who went missing in Nepal was a restaurant manager who defected and is now living in India, a South Korean newspaper reported Tuesday.

A local media report in the Himalayan country had said last week the man, surnamed Yang, may have been an intelligence official.

The South's Chosun Ilbo newspaper said he was in fact the manager of the local franchise of an overseas restaurant chain, operated by the North's regime and known as Pyongyang Okryugwan.

I have my reservations about the wisdom of broadcasting this man’s defection to the world.

Some initial report suggested that he was a NK intel officer. Now it seems that he was a mid-level official tasked with hard-cash earning business. Must be a well-connected fellow in NK regime.

SK media reported that there have been a string of mid-level(and relatively young) officials defecting to S. Korea. Succession leads to the cleaning of the deck for new leader. Many will lose their perk and power, and odds are high that they could be sent to prison camp.

With the specter of purge hanging over many ruling elites, they should make some escape plan in case the axe is falling on their neck. It was not possible in the past. However, in recent years, with regime's control breaking down and better access to outsiders, many can now afford to have the option of defection. It will increase as situation in NK deteriorates.

At some point, NK regime will lash out in all directions. To both elites and ordinary serfs, to both domestic and foreign elements. It will try to scare everybody into submission.

Probably a bit of both. Everyone working at these restaurants, or any other ex-pat NK office for that matter, is probably at least a part-timer for their Intelligence organs. It's just too convenient of a way to place "legals" in other countries.

Also probably a good way to launder counterfeit dollars and other currencies by feeding them into those economies and shipping back the real stuff. Weird. I wonder if they have a branch in Japan.

I suspect he had a fight with with his wife or some other domestic disturbance triggered this. He may have been discontent for years and something triggered him to bolt.

So, North Korean's are starving and the regime runs a chain of restaurants in other countries? WTH?

So, NorK General Staff interpreter defects to Russia, who sends him to South Korea. This guy defects. Hmmmmm.
