Posted on 12/17/2010 3:07:27 PM PST by NormsRevenge
CARACAS, Venezuela Venezuelan lawmakers granted President Hugo Chavez broad powers Friday to enact laws by decree, undermining the clout of a new congress that takes office next month with a bigger opposition bloc.
Chavez opponents condemned the move as a power grab, saying the law will be a blank check for the leftist leader to rule without consulting lawmakers. ..
A new congress goes into session Jan. 5 with an opposition contingent large enough to hinder approval of some types of major laws. Opposition lawmakers say decree powers now give Chavez a blank check to rule autocratically while ignoring the congress.
Chavez has argued he needs decree powers to fast-track funds to help the victims of recent floods and landslides, and also to hasten Venezuela's transition to a socialist state.

Good bye, VZ.
It’s been good to know ya.
Obama is absolutely green with envy at Hugo’s dictatoral Communist powers.
He will decree himself Dictator for Life within 18 months.
It was going to pass because they also made it a crime for a member of Chavez Party to vote against his/her party. lol.
Yeah, why didn’t Pelosi and Reid think of this for their lame duck session?
He’d better read up on the Romanian Revolution before considering that. It didn’t work out so well for Nicolae Ceausescu.
“Chavez opponents condemned the move as a power grab...”
Nah, no way...
Hitler got 4 years.
“From this day on, the official language of Venezuela will be Swedish. Silence! In addition to that, all citizens will be required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, all children under 16 years old are now... 16 years old!”
The moon over parador just keeps getting dimmer!
The final nail. Are the armed forces there so corrupt, they will not mount a coup?
> Chavez has argued he needs decree powers ... to hasten
> Venezuela’s transition to a socialist state.
Yes, that’s worked out so well everywhere else it’s been tried.
Hitler would approve!
A lame duck congress passing laws to thwart the will of the people? Does such a thing even happen in civilized countries?
They must be in cahoots with Chavez — nobody could be that stupid to do this otherwise.
So was his first decree to extend the year by 6 months?
Bloodshed soon to follow I am afraid. If not from the people rising up it will be from Chavez purging his enemies.
Some day soon, we are going to have to deal with this A$$hole. 1800 Russian Surface to air missles? Guess the Monroe Doctrine is dead.
The putz in the WH strikes, again!!!
I give it two years before we start finding the mass graves.
Sad thing is it would be sooner but Google will probably not allow people to view Venezuela. Chavez will pay them nicely.
Only if the great O could be granted such powers, oh wait he has been given many new pwoers by the current congress. these new powers reside in the HC law, Banking bill and others.
Before the 18 months are up, there will be a military junta in charge. I won’t speculate on where Hugo will be.
OK, Who is gonna bet on what he will decree first?
Standing by (with popcorn).
Thank goodness Chavez respects the law and will not exercise the power of decree without a law allowing him to do so.
Google is run by folks so liberal that he won’t even have to pay them for that. They will be willing accomplices.
We can only hope. :)
One of the unfortunate aspects of democratic governments is that they can vote themselves out of existence. Chavez used the old “national emergency” hustle to get it done.
Oh well, as long as its just 18 months. What could go wrong?
I’m sure the ‘progressives’ are taking notes for future reference.
For all you Pat Roberson detractors and mockers, his 25 cent solution to this grievous, lingering sore would have cured the “problemo instantaneso”
this is what the dem tried to do during the lame duck period
If you want to see what B. Hussein Obama’s America will be like tomorrow look at Venezuela today.
Contact your congressman, senators, County Sheriff, DA, State Legislators, Governor, and County Grand Jury Foreman and demand that they indict, prosecute, convict and imprison BO and all his local co-conspirators for TSA Sexual Assaults, Voter Fraud, Identity Theft, Illegal Foreign Campaign Contributions, Poisoning of the Gulf of Mexico, Embezzlement of Government funds etc.
Smooth move! So, out of curiousity, when are you going to implement the enganchado cruz as your party and national flag, eh, amigo?
I bet O wishes he could have pulled this off. Too bad, he'll just be limited to Executive Orders.
"The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."
Venezuela used to be a country in South America that had a functioning economy and much potential due to educated people, a balance between economic classes (with potential upward mobility), a good farming sector and natural resources, including oil.
Hugo Chavez got in by pandering to the poor, uneducated, landless class. He said he would soak the rich and socialism would take care of every one else.
Now, the oil, mines, large farms and electric plants hardly produce as the prior owners and managers fled or are in jail. The bosses appointed by Chavez are incompetent and corrupt. The poor still are landless, the lights in their homes lack reliable electricity and socialist rationing means food and necessaries are scarce. Chavez has become a tyrant dictator and rules without heed to anyone, including the poor who got him in. Socialism=tyranny and idiot economics.
I am sure they thought of it till Obama ran them over with the bus.
Chavez also got in because he was protected by the international left, including those in our State Dept. When he was out at the airport on the tarmac and the military had guns at his head, planning either to kill him or send him to Cuba, it was the US that told them to back off and basically reinstalled Chavez.
This was under Bush, who had congratulated the VZ people on getting rid of him...only to be undermined by his own (mostly Clinton hold-over) State Dept. He made changes later, but by then it was too late.
“he needs decree powers to fast-track funds to help the victims of recent floods and landslides”
Never let a good crisis go to waste, I suppose. Now where did I hear that....
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez hands President Obama the book titled "The Open Veins of Latin America" by Eduardo Galeano.
The virulently anti-American book tells how for 500 years Europe and then the U.S. exploited Latin America, leaving it impoverished and governed by corrupt leaders.
It outlines how U.S. capitalistic forces purportedly raped the region's natural resources and stymied Latin America's own development, exploited trade agreements and tariffs for its own interests and victimized the people of the region in exchange for the U.S.'s industrial growth.
Obama to Harry and Nancy - “Why can’t you come up with ideas like this?”
Obama’s State Dept/Hillary/diplomacy has really been successful, for the communists. Kissing off Nicaragua, El Salvador, Ecuador, a neutered Costa Rica, Panama ?, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil (run by the reds).
Not much democracy left in LA thanks to Obama.
Oh, we forgot. He tried to impose communism on Honduras too.
Where the hell is the CIA now that we need them?
Check and mate. It’s official. Venezuela is now a communist dictatorship.
