New FDA Powers: The Wrong Remedy for a Phony Crisis November 17, 2010 “Imports would also come under more stringent inspection, but contrary to conventional wisdom, food imports do not appear to carry a higher risk of contaminationat least according to FDA records. Of the 285 recalls and allergy alerts issued in the first nine months of 2010, only 16 (about 6 percent) involved foreign manufacturers.”
“three grant programs: grants to schools for allergy management ($107 million); food safety training, education, outreach, and technical assistance ($21 million); and food safety participation grants for states and tribes ($83 million).”

I got pinged to this thread yesterday.
Thank you I missed that.
Their corporate masters told them what to do.
Words fail me. This is not the America I grew up in. This thing is so broad that it will eventually cover everything and yes, I believe we just saw the first step to totally losing control over our food.
This was my biggest fear. All of the talk show guys will be on vacation this week, so the Dems will fire all remaining shot in this lamest week of the lame duck session.
There has to be a Constitutional Amendment made which says that if you are voted out in November, you are no longer eligible to vote in Congress until you are replaced.
Congressional Budget Office, Cost Estimate: S. 510: Food Safety Modernization Act, August 12, 2010, at http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/117xx/doc11794/s510.pdf (November 17, 2010).
When congress brought the owner of the peanut company to Washington to testify, knowing that he'd plead the fifth, everyone thought it was just the need for more anti-business posturing by Democrats, but now we see it may have had another purpose......
With all respect, your words and that attitude are exactly what got us into this mess in the first place...
“they don’t want to be tagged as hating the children” - they would be tagged as hating the children if each one emptied their personal bank acct and they shared the combined cash with every child in america...
I’m sorry but they are going to be called haters of: the unemployed, the sick, the poor - ________ fill in the blank - no matter what they do... and anyway, that is no reason to do or not do something... you do or not do something based on principle... not whether you will be called names by names by the backwater media.
It is the failure in the little things that leads and has lead to the failure in the big things... this is a mess... we need people with principles and spine...
sorry I am just very upset by this... very.
Sorry, again... I hope you have a very merry Christmas!
This is definitely ominous to the extreme. The Senate just gave the government complete control over every bite of food we eat. Listed below some of the worst realities.
1. FDA now put under Dept of Homeland Security
2. FDA controls all seeds.
3. FDA has power to conduct unlimited inspections of all farms and also including your backyard garden. They can confiscate and shut you down with no I repeat no judicial recourse. You cannot go to court to appeal.
4. Now the US will have to answer to the WHO so we have ceded our national sovereignty.
5. Organic food will disappear as will your Saturday Coop in the downtown square.
6. The CEO of Monsanto is on tap to be the new food czar so look for unlabelled genetically altered food at the Publix near you.
And on and on and on. This is all bad and nothing good.
They don’t want to be tagged as hating the childrens when much bigger issues should be the center of debate.
Sorry, but there just are NO EXCUSES for passing bad, unconstitutional legislation
Every Governor should run on de-fanging the Federal Government.
We ought to pay our Taxes to the State and the State only ... then starve the Fed.
Every Senator that votes to expand the Feds power should be recalled immediately. We can replace the idiot Congress critters every two years. Impeach every Radical Judge.
Elimination of the IRS, the EPa (hell all of em)
“We ain’t playing” should be heard coast to coast.
