If you, as a private citizen, are walking down the street minding your own business, and somebody’s dog comes running toward you, what do you do?

This happened a hundred times to me ridding bike as a kid...I never had to shoot one of those dogs...

BTW, mailmen go door to door for a living...How do they possibly survive without a gun and shooting dogs on a daily basis?
