Intel solar spinoff announces NY plant closing

WICCOPEE — In a stunning reversal, the frequently lauded and taxpayer-funded SpectraWatt Inc. has told the state it will close its solar cell plant starting in March and lay off 117 workers.

The announcement was startling because in the past two months, the company, which had been promised about $8 million in tax dollars, planned to train more workers and changed its work shifts to enable a 24-hour operation.

In a news release, the company said it hopes to reverse the situation that led to the decision, but SpectraWatt officials did not respond to requests for details.

Obamanomics

Not exactly--was nearly all private investment and this is just the type of place Obamanomics would keep open.

In any case, it's sad news. This conservative area has been hard hit by Gov. Paterson, and now this.

Turns out their demand forecast was prepared by the same guy who predicts unemployment numbers for DoC ... you know, the guy who gets surprised at every turn.

So ... the "unexpected" snow in winter made installation of solar panels in Europe problematic. Solution? Stop production next March so the uptick in demand during the summer months can go unmet.

Nice excuse for the real problem, learning that the cost of doing business in upstate NY is just too high for international sales when subsidies shrink.

In a short news release, SpectraWatt blamed the shutdown on a steep decline in demand for solar cells due to a harsher-than-usual European winter.

Update from the Irony Czar.

It’s expensive to out spend the local and state tax rates, which any manufacture for the last 50 years that fled, ran, moved, escaped, off shored, shut down, went out of business could of told them.

NY State Gov’t + Tax subsidies + Eco Fantasies + Trendy Media themes = recipe for dismal failure.

If there was a way to bet against this venture, I would have done it.

Several months ago, China announced they had invested over $25 BILLION in their Solar energy production facilities/plants/companies.

Anyone making solar panels anywhere but China will FAIL.

This reminds me of the excuse the US News & World Report just published to explain the population movement from the northern anti-Galt states to the southern pro-Galt states: everyone moved because it was warmer in Texas, Florida, and Georgia! Thought I would laugh my butt off when I saw that. Heck, if you believe this reasoning, then global warming would be a good thing for the Marxist states, as it would keep their subjects from moving away!

The "government-funded" part is the fact that they got tax breaks. I hate that we have high tax rates that get cut for some businesses and not others, but that seems to be the modern way.

More importantly, American workers are expensive.
