Study: Cure for Baldness Could Happen in 5 Years

German scientists have successfully grown hair follicles from stem cells, and claim it could translate into a cure for baldness in the next five years, BioScholar.com reported.

The stem cells used in the study at Berlin’s Technical University were taken from animals, but researchers said they hope to use human stem cells within a year.

Professor Roland Lauster said the study could result in a baldness treatment for as much as 80 percent of people who suffer from hair loss.

“Since 1950 the number of new chemicals used in cosmetics has risen 500—fold, and so has the need for animals to be experimented upon to ensure they are safe for humans,” he said. “This could well do away with the need for them to suffer.”

The University of Pennsylvania discovered similar findings in 2004, but failed to produce a cure for baldness.

I once heard Rush say that a cure for baldness would also be a cure for deafness. I suppose growing the cilia in the inner ear is similar to growing hair. It would be a nice example of one thing leading to another.

I’d place an advance order for a year’s supply right now, if I thought this would ever come to market.

I look around and wonder what happened to all of those breakthrough technologies I read about five years ago, that were “only a few short years away from coming to market”.

It’s gotten to the point where I just yawn when I see stuff like this. Ping me when it’s on the store shelves.

I don’t think it is going to help us at all with the baldness induced by watching this lame duck legislation just being pushed through.

For some, saw palmetto already does that.

I've read that before. I even took the stuff for a couple of years, along with the rest of my daily supplements, in the hope that it would at least slow down my hair loss. It may have helped, but I really don't know.

There's a product called Crinagen I tried that really did help.

Propecia is a great drug to significantly slow down hair loss, but I don't think it's all that great at growing hair. I do know it's a lot easier to keep the hair you have than it is to grow it back once it's gone. I started taking propecia and using Nizoral shampoo every other day and it pretty much completely stopped my hair loss. If you are serious about it you should use those products along with Rogaine(Minoxidil), although I find rogaine too messy to deal with since I don't have a bald spot, but overall thinning. Propecia, Rogaine, and Nizoral shampoo have all shown to be effective for male pattern baldness. Drugs like Avodart should work as well though. I know Saw Palmetto is suppose to work similar to Propecia, but I don't know if that's ever been proven so I think it's best to go with the prescription medication.

When I was 14, my mother told me to ask the doctor why my hair was starting to fall out.
His reply was “Don’t worry about it...My best friend in college was slick as a brick, but he was a fine fellow though”.

That was not very reassuring.

Male baldness is usually a result of high testosterone
levels.
If they cure my baldness, it might also damage my virility :P

2 Kings 2:23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
2:24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

If you look closey at a bald head, it's not really bald but instead there's just really tiny 1-3mm vellus colorless hairs there instead of normal "thick" head hair. In fact these vellus hairs look exactly like inner ear hairs.

I think the hypothesis that DHT is the cause of hair loss is wrong, instead I believe that something goes wrong in the β-catenin, Lef, Wnt system which causes your head follicles to inadvertently produce ear hair instead of head hair (obviously there's no nerves attached so you can't hear from them).

Unfortunately though playing with the β-catenin, Lef, Wnt system can easily lead to tumors which makes finding a cure extremely difficult.
