E-mails and other public records requested by opponents show a Bloomberg administration acting behind the scenes on behalf of the Park51 project — aka the Ground Zero Mosque — and a development board member looking for “political cover” before allowing the project to go forward.
Bloomberg administration officials are working “very closely with the organizers of the project. . . to combat public opposition and navigate various governmental hurdles.” One administration official even ghost-wrote a letter for Park51 organizers.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
In one email from May, Shelly Friedman, the organizers’ lawyer, wrote that Manhattan Community Board 1′s vote in support of the project would be helpful as organizers urged landmark commission Chairman Robert Tierney and other panel members to reject landmark status for the building currently on the site. “I do know that chairman Tierney was looking forward to having the ‘political cover’ their support would bring him,” Ms. Friedman wrote.
Brett Joshpe, counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, one of the groups that sought the documents and is suing the city, said Ms. Friedman’s email is telling.
“Our allegation all along has been that politics tainted this process and that the Landmarks decision was not actually based on a faithful review of the architectural or historical value of the building but based upon political influences,” Mr. Joshpe said.
The exchange of emails also reveals how heavily involved the administration was in the project’s development. One email shows that Nazli Parvizi, the city’s community affairs commissioner, drafted a letter that Daisy Khan, the wife of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, wrote to the community board. City officials also intervened to help the organizers get permits to conduct prayers at the site. In one email, organizers agreed to help fund a 2009 Ramadan celebration at Gracie Mansion.
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said the emails are proof that the mayor’s staff was coordinating with the Islamic center’s leaders.
“They were getting press advice from the mayor’s office, they were editing letters for them,” he said. “They were advising them on the all important landmark issue.”
“They were told what to do in order to get approval and there was never any question of getting approval,” he said. “It was obviously political.”

A friend of mine in NYC said she saw OBL walking down East 17th St sipping coffee last weekend. The man she said was the spitting image but perhaps a few years younger. I did a google search for ‘OBL in NYC’ and got OBL Architects in NJ.

I've followed Bloomberg's business for the decades I've used his terminals, and the media end of his empire is AFAIK a money loser. It's a huge vanity project, financed by the oceans of cash thrown off by his financial technology enterprise.
The real Arab money is parked and managed in London. The volume of financial business executed in the Arab states is far too small to justify the Mayor's bizarre promotion of the victory mosque.
I *wish* money alone could account for the Mayor's sell-out of his religion, city, and country. I fear something worse.

I would not and I did have an offer post 9/11 from a moderate islamic country who wanted to partner up. I essentially told them to get ****ed and they were threatening to sick the State Dept and Dept of Commerce on me cause they had all the right connections. I told them to go for it. I told them post 9/11 that I had no interest in EVER doing business with a country in the Middle East.
Of course, Mr. Joshpe is right on target on this point, and would win his case if it weren't for the fact that the judge who will ultimately decide it will likely be a crony of the same cabal he's suing.

Given he was never married, has no children, what the he$$ does he care about the future? This has nothing to do with money or business interests. Instead this is Bloomberg expressing his contempt for the sensibilities of red state America, which is probably quite deep, and polishing his multi-culti cred among the NYC wine and brie crowd. This is how he signals to them — and proves to himself — that he’s a cosmopolitan sophisticate like they are, not some nativist redneck like other Republicans. This is about how he sees himself and how he wants to be seen, which goes deeper than money.
That’s probably true, but I think money is also an issue with Bloomberg. In effect, there is no downside in Bloomberg’s world, a world that is exceedingly insulated - Bloomberg’s feet literally never have to touch the ground of NY.
Ultimately, Bloomberg gets liberal “approval” and makes friends/extends his business ties with the Saudi’s.
Probably right — it’s a “twofer” for him.
