SPJ Diversity Committee launches journalistic campaign against the term ‘illegal immigrant’
Daily Caller ^ | 12/27/2010 | Matthew Boyle

The Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is seeking to “inform and sensitize” reporters nationwide about how “offensive” the term “illegal immigrant” is to Latinos.

Diversity Committee member Leo Laurence announced the campaign against “illegal immigrant” and “illegal alien” terminology in the latest issue of the organization’s magazine, Quill, writing that those who have not obtained citizenship

but have entered the country without any prior approval should be called “undocumented workers” or “undocumented immigrants.”

In his report, Laurence quotes SPJ Diversity Committee chairman George Daniels as saying, “this is not about being politically correct,” but about aiming to “minimize harm,” when reporting. When Daniels says “minimize harm,” he is referring to one of the major tenets of SPJ’s code of ethics, which many journalists nationwide follow.

Laurence defends SPJ’s new campaign by offering an interpretation of the Constitution that provides for constitutional rights for everyone, including non-citizens, saying that any person should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He said that, constitutionally, a judge is the only person who can deem anyone or anything “illegal.”

If Hispanics want to be taken seriously that they are not a threat to our nation, they need to make a statement that they are for the laws of our country and we are not going to change them for their benefit.

No, they’re not biased or have an agenda.

Why do you ask?

I find it offensive too - I prefer illegal alien. The term immigrant bestows a notion of legitimacy that I feel they do not deserve.

Hey SPJ - how about going for accuracy in reporting? These people are illegals, period.

Perhaps the Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists should spend time “informing and sensitizing” their fellow journalists at MSNBC who call conservatives nasty names...

Student, to secretary in department office:

write my folks, OK? They think I’m a pimp in East LA.”

It’s not a legal term that requires a conviction or legal ruling. It is a description of someone who has entered this country illegally or has allowed a visa to expire. When Big Sis says we have gone from a high of 700 something thousand illegal immigrants a year to 200 something thousand, she isn’t just talking about those who have had a deportation ruling.

If anyone out there wants to know why I quit being a journalist in 1995, here’s another example.

“inform and sensitize” ?

More like “disinform and desensitize”. Let’s just call it something else, and maybe the sheeple won’t notice...

The simple fact is that these are criminals. They broke US law when they illegally crossed the border. All the feel-good platitudes to the contrary, they are still criminals. That, by definition makes them ILLEGAL. And, they are hardly immigrants. They are just what they’ve been called for years...ILLEGAL ALIENS.

If we continue to let the libtards define the terms of the argument, we are destined to continue the decline in which we find ourselves currently.

Personally, I prefer the term wetback. Denotes they did not come thru a border crossing legally.

Great then we will use the correct term of illegal Aliens, they are not immigrants if they are here illegally. The vast majority of Americans don’t give a rat’s a** if the term is offensive or not.

I am sorry for the error. At their site they have major news of all types that cover a wide range of subjects from across the world. Their lay out looks like what a major newspaper would look like
The Daily Caller is a 24-hour news site providing original reporting from an experienced team of professional reporters, thought-provoking commentary and breaking news. In addition to hard news reporting and commentary.I just did not see it being a blog .

If journalists want to be taken seriously they should get back to calling things and events by their real names. Euphemisms and political correctness are dishonest and subversive propaganda techniques.
