This has been going around for approximately a year that I know of. Snopes sez it’s false. Snopes has been known to lie if it in any way helped their pet raghead, who currently holds the title of POTUS. So we are left up in the air for now. Best source to determine its veracity would be a newspaper in Australia, perhaps.

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s declaration that Germany’s attempts to build a multicultural society had “utterly failed” is feeding a growing debate over how to deal with the millions of foreigners who call the country home.
Merkel told a meeting of young members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union that while immigrants are welcome in Germany, they must learn the language and accept the country’s cultural norms – sounding a note heard increasingly across Europe as it battles an economic slump and worries about homegrown terrorism.
“This multicultural approach, saying that we simply live side by side and live happily with each other has failed. Utterly failed,” Merkel said.
Merkel’s comments were met with applause by the more conservative members of her party, but some Germans in cosmopolitan Berlin argued Sunday she was out of touch with the country’s daily life.
Based on what I know about this woman (which isn’t a whole lot) I can’t imagine her saying this. Isn’t she a bit of a Labour party lefty?

Madame Merkel really has her head screwed on straight. I sure wish an American president would say that. Perhaps President Palin will. Matter of fact, I bet she will.
I think it was former Australian PM John Howard who made similar comments.

There is no way she would ever say those things.
I just made an online inquiry to The National Library of Australia. If they reply and give me an answer of some kind I will share it.
Now that I have scrolled down and seen some of the comments, I think I made my inquiry to The National Library of Australia in vain.......unless they set me straight and inform me that the remarks were made, but by Howard instead of Gillard.
Just did a quick search. Seems like both Howard and former Aussie Treasurer Costello who made GREAT comments:

Posting this link for general reference and a jump-off point for anyone interested in further researching it. I do remember a hullabaloo at the time Howard made correct comments stating that Muslims should assimilate or leave (paraphrasing).
