Citizen of nowhere: The story of one undocumented student
Las Vegas Sun ^ | Jan. 3, 2011 | April Corbin

When Jessica was selected as Student of the Year in eighth grade, she should have celebrated this goldest of gold stars. Instead, she slammed doors, bawled her eyes out and let her parents know she would hate them for the rest of her life.

What they were doing to her wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair. She’d been a model student, and now her middle school wanted to reward her by footing half the bill for a trip to Washington, D.C. — home to all the presidents whose birthdays and middle names she’d memorized.

Her parents wouldn’t let her go. They said they had their reasons, none of which would suffice for a 13-year-old who really, really, really wanted to get on that plane.

It’s a scene that plays out in homes across America — the battle between a teenager with a desire and parents saddled with responsibility — but for Jessica this fight was more than that. It was the moment she realized she was not like her classmates, not like the 50 students going on this class trip without her.

It was the first time she fully grasped the words undocumented immigrant — and understood that they applied to her.

“Up until then I realized there was this issue with other people, but in my mind it wasn’t me,” says Jessica, now 22, whose parents kept her home because they were afraid of what might happen if someone in airline security discovered her immigration status. “I knew we’d traveled here, but we couldn’t possibly be illegal or doing anything wrong. When you’re at that age, it’s like, ‘My mom and dad are awesome; they would never do anything bad.’ ”

BTW, there’s a poll on the page of the newspaper and only 4 people have voted on it.
That's not very many.

We need to let the reporter see how this country’s citizens feel about the issue by voting on that poll.
If there's a comparison of voters vs # times article viewed then I would say this country’s citizens have shown the reporter how they feel by not voting.
It's not even worth their time to take the poll.

Here in AZ we (regular people) just refer to them as ILLEGALS. Period. The media calls them undocumented...but they don’t count.

They didn’t mean to stay forever but plans change. What a crock! This poor girl’s parents stayed in the US either knowing full well the problems she would encounter or more likely because of all the talk of amnesty that was going around a few years ago. They figured they would get amnesty and everything would be hunky dory. Now they are in the “S@#t” as Gordon Ramsey would say.

Undocumented immigrant. Is that anything like an illegal alien?

I am rabidly opposed to amnesty and have spent literally hours of time emailing and calling legislators to oppose it. If the DREAM ACT would do nothing more than let 68,000 kids stay here permanently and go to college or join the military I would probably be OK with it but as we all know that is not the case. This backdoor amnesty bill was going to allow people up to 30 years old to be included and then let them apply to bring their whole famdamily in from Mexico. So in reality it would have been about 2 million people.

Its not the fault of the kids but it is the fault of the parents who came here illegally and choices have consquences. These kids don’t have the right to take scholarships that legitimate US kids could be getting. Sorry I’m just not buying this emotional blackmail scheme by the uber lefties.

custody follows the parents.

They ARE illegal and subject to deportation, so she could go with them upon deportation.

Besides how do ILLEGAL ALIENS afford such expensive class trips?

for every illegal alien in a school, some legal resident or citizen is deprived of opportunites.
