Frito-Lay won't pull controversial Christian parody Doritos commercial

By: 01/03/11 4:31 PM

In what may be another ad campaign gone awry, Doritos is featuring a new Super Bowl advertisement in which a priest, searching for ways to return to the church, has a supposedly brilliant idea: Replacing the host wafer with a Dorito. While the denomination of the church is unclear, what is clear is that most Christian denominations consider the host to be a big portion of communion and might find the commercial, titled "Feed your flock!", insensitive.

A “big portion” of Communion? I was taught the host IS the body of Jesus Christ, and when the priest consecrates the hosts I still bow my head as it is disrespectful to stare at God.

To put this in a commercial with Doritos is unbelievably offensive.

How clever . How brave . Try to use the Muslim faith in their stupid ad and the factory would become a pile of cinder .

Should have parodied Muslims.

I bet they wouldn’t run it.

lol flame if you must, but this one seems (depending on the whole context) relatively harmless, in fact, it could be quite funny. Are they making fun of communion itself? That could be a problem 1 Cor 11:27. On the other hand, if it’s just a matter of suggesting a substitution, I see no problem. Bible doesn’t say what kind of “bread” we are to use, nor what kind of “wine” (we use grape juice lol, so maybe next commercial is to substitute Welch’s for Great Value/Walmart brand lol).

My only problem is if they used the articifial colored Doritos.

Frito-Lay, Go ahead, make a commercial about Muslims.
No? then they’ve already won.
Are Doritos Halal already?

Don’t laugh, but I am sure churches struggle with Nabisco crackers vs. Manischevits (?sp?) matzoh crackers vs. something else. I’ve been to churches where they use regular bread, sliced into cubes.

Precisely. Let's see how many that thought it was ok to make fun of Mohammad or Allah, think this is funny. Somehow the shoe doesn't always fit when its on the other foot. ;)

Like you, I find this clever and cute.

Well I stopped drinking pepsi when they changed their logo to look like obama’s. Now doritos are off the list too.

More than illustrating contempt for Christianity, this move actually displays the contemporary culture’s sheer ignorance of Christian faith. What was once understood has become totally foreign. Sadly, there is a lot less salt and light today in a world that is descending further into darkness.

This is an *entry* for a contest. I see nothing that shows that this entry won the contest nor that Frito-Lay endorsed/approved it.

I hope people realize that this isn’t an actual advertisement....yet.

Fine. No more Doritos or other Frito-Lay products in our house, says this Catholic mom.

Necco Wafers or Doritos....

What is the target market for the ad?? Probably not what we think....I'd say it's aimed at the "majority of Christians".....covering a large age group....
