New Speaker Vows to Share Powera Tricky Proposition
JANUARY 4, 2011
By NAFTALI BENDAVID And PATRICK O'CONNOR
When John Boehner takes over one of the most powerful jobs in Washington this week, he says his first order of business is to make himself less powerful.
On Wednesday the new speaker of the House of Representatives plans to offer a package of rule changes that, he says, will give minority-party members more of a say and decentralize power. In short, Ohio Republican Mr. Boehner is promising he'll be a different figure from many speakers throughout historyfrom Republican Joseph Cannon a century ago to his immediate predecessor, Democrat Nancy Pelosiwho kept a tighter leash.
But there's a reason so many speakers try to keep close control: It works.

No need to bother reading all your posts when I can address the posts you have sent to me. You saw my post and in a knee-jerk reaction you incorrectly concluded that I had not read the article, which is ironic, considering your message.
What you are doing is assuming that anyone that doesn’t agree with you just hasn’t read the article, which in this case is wrong. Now, we may not agree on boehner’s approach, that is fine, but you seem to have got it in your mind that it is okay for you to declare that FReepers who have a contrary point of view are sheep. Not me. I’ve read it. I’ve commented on it. Again, in case you didn’t read the article, boehner declared that he intends to work with both sides. I don’t think that is a very good plan.
This is very simple to understand, if you don’t like your actions being referred to as sheepish, don’t copy someone else’s posts and go about pasting it as a response to any posts you happen to disagree with.
I made no such assumption. You, in a knee-jerk reaction, have accused me of something I didn't do.
I see that you are ignoring the part of the post that applies to you.
Read the friggin article, you sheep.
"Again, as noted in the article..." may be taken as an indication that I have read the article. We may not agree on what was stated in the article. That's fine. Bottom line, your ctrl-v of another FReeper's words does not apply here.
Back to the article, considering your initial response about having the logic reversed, your cut and paste follow-up fell way short of what I was expecting. As I conceded earlier, of course, I hope I am wrong and boehner's notion of holding hands and singing cumbaya with the same people that want to enforce liberal policies will all work out for the best. That doesn't sound like a good plan.
Some of it does but you keep ignoring that part.

Boehner’s office wrote:
Senators Reid, Durbin, Schumer, Murray and Stabenow:
Thank you for reminding us and the American people of the backroom deal that you struck behind closed doors with Big Pharma, resulting in bigger profits for the drug companies, and higher prescription drug costs for 33 million seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D, at a cost to the taxpayers of $42.6 billion.
The House is going to pass legislation to repeal that now. Youre welcome.
Now it is evident that in a knee-jerk response to reading my post, you copied and pasted a post that you now think only some of which applies. None of it applies. I addressed your attack of other FReepers. As for the rest of what you copied and pasted, you are ignoring the concept that others can have differing points of view. Even the article expects there to be those who disagree with boehner- “In response to those who warn of chaos”. This is what I initially commented on.
Read the article. Don’t read the article. Who cares? Just wait and see. Words are cheap. Sometimes words mean something. Soemtimes they don’t. But actions speak louder than words.
Maybe Boehner is crazy like a fox. Can you imagine the media for the next two years if instead he had said he was going to grab for much more power than Pelosi had and tried to scr3w the Dems more than she scr3wed the Pubbies? Hopefully in this respect he’ll be like a Democrat and say one thing and do another.
Anyway there is much to do. More than one person can manage. So he needs to delegate. My problem is with some of those to whom he will be delegating, such as Fred Upton.
But let’s not forget that Reagan delegated a lot and that worked out reasonably well.
The one word post was not me. Would that I were that succinct :-)
> But lets not forget that Reagan delegated a lot and that worked out reasonably well.
An executive, like the President, must delegate. A Speaker of the House must get his hands a little dirty in order to corral the wayward and be a united front. I wish Boehner the best of luck, and I’m hopeful, but I still think we need to keep a close eye on him.
And I’m sorry, but breaking into tears again? Geez Louise that is getting to be annoying, Speaker. It’s embarrassing. Let’s leave the blubbering to the metrosexual Dims.
Sorry. It was one below yours. Yours was the more mature one:
“Someone needs to tell the crybaby to man up and grow a spine.”
Honestly, doesn’t Boehner’s crying bother you? Maybe this was how I was raised, but boohooing when you get handed the gavel of power seems really Dimocrat-like, metrosexual behavior to me. And given his wishy washy past, and his conciliatory tone today, it just doesn’t sit well with me. I hope I’m wrong.
No. And his tone was not conciliatory today:
"The people voted to end business as usual, and today we begin carrying out their instructions"
Conciliatory? NOT!

Unlike Newt Gingrich, whose style bordered on frenetic when he led Republicans to power in 1994, Boehner has been careful to strike a humbler pose as he works to keep faith with the anti-government voters who supported the party’s candidates.
“The American people have humbled us. They have refreshed our memories as to just how temporary the privilege to serve is. They have reminded us that everything here is on loan from them. This includes this gavel,” he said, as outgoing Speaker Pelosi handed over a gavel that symbolized his authority.
On their first day in power, House Republicans pushed through a series of rules changes they said would make the House more accessible to the public and enhance the rights of minority lawmakers.
The Thursday agenda includes cutting funding of lawmakers’ offices, committees’ budgets and leadership staff by 5 percent, for a savings estimated at $35 million.
The first volley in Obama’s direction is expected next week, when Republicans advance a bill to repeal the health care overhaul that Democrats passed last March after months of struggle.
I miss you.

The kick-off of the 112th Congress on Wednesday also marked the end of an era in the House the demise of a committee devoted solely to climate change and energy issues. The Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming, created by Nancy Pelosi in 2006, has been shuttered under the new Republican leadership. In the final days of the committee, staffers released a report on what the committee accomplished in its brief tenure an epitaph of sorts.
Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa, marking his first day as head of a House immigration panel, introduced a bill on Wednesday to end the practice of birthright citizenship.

I’m flattered..sure.
Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t watch Boehner. Sometimes the weeper can be a bit soft, but I am okay so far here. The rule changes were good.
So far so good from here, too. I’m loving the steps the new Congress is taking!
