Almost all STD’s need genital to genital contact to transmit. But while yes, some sort of “gray area” of contact without penetration may have (possibly) been the culprit - I find it FAR MORE LIKELY that they (gasp!) LIED.
People lie about sex.
An amazing revelation to some, to be sure. But there it is.
People lie about sex.

Almost all STDs need genital to genital contact to transmit. True but Trichomoniasis can pass woman to woman through anything wet/damp including a toilet seat. I worked in a clinic for a while and there was a 11YO girl that got it from her 15yo hosebag sister.

"I find it FAR MORE LIKELY that they (gasp!) LIED." If you read the article, the parameter set to define "abstinent" was no sex in the last year. I find it just as plausible that they might have contracted their STD prior to that window.
