Not any sort of expert, but I am pretty sure a stroke could produce disoriented behavior like that of a person with demntia. He could have had a stroke without previous medical evidence.
I know a guy who fed a box of donuts to the front grill of a parked school bus because he thought it was a hungry monster. His libation was vodka with haladol.

Transient Ischemic Attack (sp?) or TIA is likely. My mother experienced them for several years before she died. She would become befuddled but not completely out of it.
There was one that was comical incident in the serious way it transpired. She was adamant about being taken to hospital A for emergency treatment. Both my self and my sister preferred Hospital B but relented to her desires.
On one such attack the rescue squad came and transported her to the Hospital A ER as she wanted. When I got there she asked me where she was. I told her she was in the stroke treatment center at hospital A. She asked me that several times, and my sister and the nurses.
She came around and her mind cleared and we were leaving for home. It was then I saw a sheet on her bed from Hospital B. The ambulance apparently gathers some sheets from the two hospitals for use in transports but doesn’t worry much about which sheet is used for which transport. People were telling mom she was in hospital A but the sheet clearly said hospital B.
The TIA still doesn’t account forthe death and garbage dumpster disposal.
