Actually the .357 has a better 'one shot stop' rating than the venerable .45. I'll chalk this one up to shot placement.
And I'll not fault the store owner in the least. He did well under very stressful circumstances.

Put the .357 vs. .45 to the Paint Can test with hollow points.
What splatters the most. .357 hands down.
