Two years ago the irs took it upon themselves to correct our 1040, this year we get a bill for three grand, so we are forced to retain a tax specialist at our expence, and they wanted thier money pronto. F-ing idiots.

I went a few years without filing my taxes (I was due refunds, so in the end the IRS didn’t care). But in the interim, they decided to calculate my taxes for me, and sent me a bill for $72,000. That was the imputus I needed to get to work filing my taxes. They ended up owing me money, of course.

I’ve never had to hire a lawyer though, just send in some extra information once or twice. WHen I did catch up, I transposed two numbers in my daughters SS number, on 4 years of taxes (since I doing them all at once, I didn’t get feedback).

It was difficult work to get that corrected, which I needed because they rejected her as a dependent. And because some were old, and some current, I had to go through different offices to get it fixed on all the tax returns.

But eventually we worked it all out.
