Martinez Halts Environmental Rules
POSTED: 1:51 pm MST January 5, 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Gov. Susana Martinez's administration is making good on campaign promises to drop new regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions by canceling their planned publication in the state register.

Officials at the state Environment Department made the request to keep the rules from being published.

A state records official confirmed Wednesday that he has received the request and the rules will not be published.

The move is being criticized by environmental groups and lawyers who spent the past two years debating the merits of the rules before state regulators. They contend the administration is circumventing the law.

Susana Martinez is driving the Dem nuts. Just today she nominated former U.S. Sen. and astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt to head the Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department.

This is the Dem Party of NM response.

“In a clear sign that polluters in New Mexico will have free reign under her administration, Gov. Susana Martinez today nominated global warming denier and former astronaut Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt to head the state’s Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

“On many occasions, Schmitt has scoffed at decades of sound scientific evidence and a mountain of research that validated the human causes of global climate change.

“In one instance he told Fox News that the ‘CO2 scare is a red herring,’ that the ‘global warming scare is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision-making.’

“‘Martinez promised bold change and she’s bringing it in the form of an appointee at odds with the basic tenets of science and reason,’ said DPNM Executive Director Scott Forrester. ‘This appointment is a clear signal to Martinez’s big-oil backers that the days of basic protections for New Mexicans’ air and drinking water are

“In a clear sign that polluters in New Mexico will have free reign under her administration, Gov. Susana Martinez today nominated global warming denier and former astronaut Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt to head the state’s Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

Schmitt is 76 years old and probably a good interim secretary for the start of Martinez' term. He was also US Senator until he was defeated by current US Senator Bingaman in 1982. He has been a university professor and consultant since then.

As an aside, when I was in college between my junior and senior years we took a six-week field geology course in SE Arizona. Following completion of that course, we were offered jobs with the Apollo space program for the remainder of the summer at the USGS astrogeology branch in Flagstaff. We spent it testing geological observation and collection methods in and around the volcanic craters near Flagstaff and the big meteor crater outside Winslow. The only astronaut we got to meet was Schmitt who we found to be very focused and disciplined in his job, and whose hard work resulted in his being chosen to walk on the moon.
