Since they are too busy to be doing what they are supposed to be doing, I would relieve them of their committee assignments until they have more time.

"I know PA doesn’t have recall, will there be a challenger at the next primary?"

Part of Fitzpatrick's district is in our township. There are plenty of Republicans around here who held their noses to vote for him while viewing him as a lukewarm candidate. He should expect to be challenged from within his party as well as by the Dems. It's not a safe seat for him by any means.

This garbage drives me crazy. Just like when the House or Senate is gaveled in and it takes 5 minutes for these prima donnas to shut up.

Their anguses need to be in their seats with their pie holes shut 10 seconds after that hammer hits.

All of you have the completely wrong idea of what happened. I was there. These were constituents who traveled to DC to see the old guard thrown out and lend their support to a great man, one who survived a battle with cancer to return to the floor. You were all succered by an article in the liberal press who called us political donors. Fitzpatrick wanted to celebrate with those he represents, what a novel concept. By the way he provided the refreshments not us “Donors”. Have any of you ever paid for a roundtrip bus ride to DC? $30.00 is cheap. It was amazing to see so many people cheering the passing of the gavel. It is not just the corrupt politician who need to be thrown out , but the reactionary, negative press and those who foolishly react without the facts. Shame on all of you.

Strange how the other 60+ new representatives somehow managed to have themselves where they belonged during the swearing in ceremony. I guess none of them had any constituents to “lend support” on hand.

"Though Sessions and Fitzpatrick watched the House swearing-in ceremony on television in the Capitol Visitors Center with their hands raised, the Huffington Post points out that there is no provision in the Constitution that allows for a remote swearing-in."

Oh, but the Founders surely couldn't have imagined television and other advanced technologies that we have, so this has to be acceptable... [/sarc]

“That wasn’t planned. It just worked out that way,” Fitzpatrick said Wednesday.

This just pisses me off. We're trying to get off to a good start and these idiots pull this shit.
You want me to believe that the "swearing in" came up as a last minute event that happened to interfere with your little gathering ???
Your planners should be canned. The official business has PRIORITY over your event...should have been planned for after the swearing in....good god.....if you're not going to take it seriously Fitz....just leave now.....

It's not bad enough they skipped the required swearing-in ceremony, but they cast votes knowing full well they were not qualified to do so.

Not the sort of thing I, as a common, every-day citizen and voter chooses to tolerate. Hopefully the leadership will make an example of these two.

Fitzpatrick is a retread who only reluctantly got Tea Party support.

The incumbent Dem was Pat Murphy who was about as bad as you can get.

I’m with you....a three month hiatus from chairmanships would suffice.

On second look this was a pretty cheap shot at Fitzpatrick with regard to him meeting with "donors"

The $30 fee was to pay for the bus ride for supporters from Bucks County.

It doesn't mean, though, that he doesn't deserve a kick in the tail for missing the ceremony.

“That wasn’t planned. It just worked out that way,”

Culpable explanation; it's where the onus lies.

There’s nothing in the constitution that dictates the method of taking the oath; it merely says that they must take an oath.

According to other stories, they already signed a written oath provided by the clerk of the house — that should be sufficient to meet the rules, but I don’t know exactly what rules the house is operating under and what they say.

The public swearing-in most certainly is NOT the one that meets constitutional muster — how would anybody prove that a person standing in that group of 435 people actually SAID the words? I’m sure the written document is what they file to prove people were sworn in.

It doesn’t shock me that this is still being talked about, because the liberal media will run with any absurd non-story it can find.

It was already done. The story lags the events.

They had groups of supporters, and wanted the supporters to be with them when they were “sworn in”. So they did it while watching on the TV, so their supporters could be there.

They already had signed the official oath, a written form collected by the clerk of the house. I’m pretty sure the written document is the official document that shows they took the oath, and the public oath is theater. They just pushed the theater to a new level.

Washington (CNN) — The House of Representatives decided Friday to invalidate the initial votes cast in the new Congress by two Republican congressmen: Reps. Pete Sessions of Texas and Mike Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

That’s a lot easier than trying to argue the point. The Republicans are trying to make it go away, because in the end it was stupid and distracting.

But I can guarantee you if it was democrats, the press wouldn’t have mentioned it, they wouldn’t be changing the votes, and nobody would care.

Anyway, the rules of the house are the implementation of the constitutional requirement to take an oath. Congress could have made the rule so they could swear people in vie TV.

My point about the absurdity of the public swearing-in being the constitutional requirement is proven by the fact that these two didn’t get the public swearing-int, and were able to vote. The only reason we KNOW they were not there, and therefore the issue was raised, was because someone HAD a video of them NOT being there. If they had simply stepped out of the chamber, nobody would know.

So that can’t possibly meet the constitutional requirement to swear an oath. That’s why I believe they all do a written oath, and that written oath is collected and put in the record.

My explanation for why they re-voted is that the republicans don’t have the guts to stand up to this kind of thing, they always go out of their way to react to the press.
