I thought the feds prohibited silencers....?
Am I thinking of something else?

You can legally own a suppressor(”silencer”). You have to pay a few hundred dollars for a federal ‘tax stamp’, and submit to a thorough federal background check. I believe a leading member of your local law enforcement has to sign off on it too. (I’m not entirely clear on this part) Assuming if you pass the background check, if your local sheriff or DA won’t sign for you, the state police will.

Lawful ownership requires a Class 3 permit, as I recall.
