The 2011 FIRST Robotics Competition Kick off will take place on January 8th, 2011 at 10:30AM EST. The Kickoff will be aired on NASA TV!

The Saturday Kickoff marks the beginning of the design and build season. Whether it’s at the NASA-televised event  in Manchester, New Hampshire or one of the numerous “local” Kickoffs, teams have the opportunity to meet with others to compare notes, get ideas, make friends, find mentoring teams, learn the game, pick up the Kit of Parts, and get geared up for the exciting competition season.

On Friday, the Manchester workshops equip teams with knowledge of various dynamics of the season. FIRST also hosts a Founder’s reception, providing mentors with the opportunity to meet Dean, Woodie, and FIRST staff members; listen to motivating speeches; share a tasty buffet; and find out the plans for future program growth. My daughter teaches in a summer camp at the local university.

Is she involved with FIRST?

No. She has been to NASA. She does not teach the classes at school, but does teach the summer classes at LeTourneau.

If she has any interest in engineering as well, I'd encourage her to look into FIRST for her class.

The experience is great for the kids.

Her second son is a senior this year, and will be going into engineering at LSU (I think). Her oldest is a medic in the National Guard and plans to be a doctor. Her youngest is a freshman this year, and won an award two years ago at the local competition. Her best friend teaches robotics at the middle school, and is one of the reasons she has been to NASA for some summer classes, and teaches the summer camps. Yes indeed! My daughter is her school's team leader and primary driver. Last year was the first year her school made it through the Regionals and into the Nationals. Very proud papa here. :)

It's a terrific activity educationally, too. Her experience helping design and build the robot convinced her that she wants to go in to engineering in college.

My 14 year old son is working on his FIRST Tech Challenge Team robot as I type.

Not as busy as she. She and her mom (my ex) live far away, alas (we all get along great, but the distance is unfortunate), and so I work with them as a "consulting engineer" and ardent supporter.
