Zangara opened fire, hitting five people, including Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, who died of his wounds on March 6. During his trial, Zangara stated "I have the gun in my hand. I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists." He was convicted on March 10, sent to the death cell, and executed by "Old Smokey" on March 20.
