Women 'want rich husbands, not careers': New survey claims drive for gender equality is a myth

Woman still want to ‘marry up’ and naturally choose husbands who earn more than themselves, a report suggests.

The idea of most women wanting to be financially independent is a myth, according to Catherine Hakim of the London School of Economics.

Despite years of equality campaigning, more women are choosing to marry wealthy men than in the 1940s, the expert claims.

In her report, published by the Centre for Policy Studies think tank, she suggests men dominate the top positions because women simply do not want careers in business.

She criticised David Cameron for backing the idea of quotas to ensure that leading companies appointed more women to their boards.

‘Women’s aspiration to marry up, if they can, to a man who is better-educated and higher-earning persists in most European countries,’ she said. ‘Women thereby continue to use marriage as an alternative or supplement to their employment careers.’

The research, which drew on existing data drawn from Britain and Spain, showed that 20 per cent of British women married husbands with a significantly better education than their own in 1949.

By the 1990s, the percentage of women deciding to ‘marry up’ had climbed to 38 per cent – with a similar pattern repeated in the rest of Europe, the US and Australia.

Even successful women want to find men even more successful than they are, and that’s why a lot of them are never satisfied.

Who knew?

I didn’t need a newspaper article to know this. Most men don’t.

Why would a rich guy marry such women?

Might as well get a 20 year old girlfriend and trade her out every 4 years.

Even successful women want to find men even more successful than they are, and that’s why a lot of them are never satisfied.

And if they do marry a wealthy man, in a couple of years his status will not be enough to satisfy her ego, she will attempt to make HIS wealth HER wealth in the divorce, and move on.

This is why, as another poster noted, rich guys would do better to get 20-year-old girlfriends and trade them every few years. The big issue would involve any desire for children, which might be solved by him adopting kids who would be EXCLUSIVELY his and could not be taken away by divorce.

“Why would a rich guy marry such women?”

To have a family?

With colleges attendees now over 60% female and rising, something tells me there is going to be a LOT of unsatisfied women in the future.

We forget how recently this experiment in gender relations began. And we seem to just ignore what a massive change it was. We basically took the hard learned wisdom of 6000 years and tossed them all out the window.

And people are surprised that we are left with some unintended consequences.

The odds that by marrying a woman and procreating you will end up with a family are slimmer every year.

But you’re right, that is the only chance a man has.

If they are not interested in equality anymore can we do something about the ones that always vote for the Obama-types? I am just saying...LOL

When I was in law school in the 1980s, there were plenty of female law students. The Women’s Law School Association held but one mixer, with the Med School students!

I suspect most of the Med School students weren’t too interested.

Without this dynamic, there would be no such thing as Gift Shops, and dinky little stores that sell trinkets. Women use their rich husband’s wallets to bankroll failing business ideas. Ideas based on social status.

This accounts for a LARGE portion of female-owned businesses.

I know someone who did her Master’s Thesis on the best ways for a woman in poverty to get out of poverty. She looked at government programs, education, etc. No matter how she crunched the numbers, the only sure-fire way for a woman to escape poverty was to marry someone with a steady income.

She was a bit embarrassed by the results, since academics always assume that education and government programs are the solution to everything, but she turned in her paper, got her degree, and then quietly tossed the thesis into the trash.

I did too. Hubby was a broke college student when we met and married. He was simply the best guy I’d ever met.

Neither of us is perfect, but we’re perfect for each other! :-)

I might have to disagree with you on the “large portion” part of your assertion, if you meant that it was a majority.

Another incentive for “female-owned businesses” is the government-based incentive - easy loans, grants, tax breaks, etc, for “minority-owned businesses”.

Easy to put your wife’s name on the family business and get all those perks, now, isn’t it?

Me too.

My DH puts up with me.
I have a degree and he doesn’t.

Besides, he is a cutie.

Now for my girls, I tell them to get good degrees and be able to support the men they love. Cause Lord knows, that guy could be sweet, wonderful, treat her like gold but (like my Goddaughter) be striving to be a Brewmeister. (I kid you not).
My Goddaughter is 22 and about to graduate with a degree from Columbia. She is brilliant and loves him to pieces.

These are the same people who list their Dog as a Security expense. I know the type.

A trip down any road in Westport CT will reveal the face of this dynamic. The new-age gift shops, “Angel Shops” and cutely-named trinket shops that have no customers - save other rich female business owners on the same street.

Like celebrities, they make the daily rounds to stroke each other’s psychological g-spots.
