The president and first lady shared a dramatic moment of silence on the south lawn of the White House at 11 a.m. ET Monday in observance of the tragic Arizona shooting that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords fighting for her life, even as a major conservative backlash mounted against media outlets who blamed the shooting on inflammatory right-wing rhetoric.
The shooting spree at a Tucson Safeway on Saturday was allegedly the work of 22-year-old Jared Loughner, an Armed Services reject who had a previous history of mental issues. Various sources report Loughner had exhibited increasingly bizarre behavior in recent months. Thirteen others were wounded and six people were killed in the shooting.
An initial NPR report erroneously announced that Giffords had passed away. NPR apologized for that error on Monday, calling it a grave error. Regardless, pundits and politicians immediately pounced Saturday at what they apparently saw as a political opportunity.
A variety of news outlets pointed to a Sarah Palin Facebook post nine months ago that listed a number of Democrats the GOP hoped to defeat, using what appeared to be crosshairs symbols, which were soon removed. Giffords district was one of those listed, and Giffords later made a cable TV appearance cautioning that heated political rhetoric could have serious consequences.
What those outlets overlooked: The left-wing Daily Kos blog also had targeted Giffords for her centrist positions, and wrote of putting her in the bull's-eye.
The New York Times headline for the story was Bloodshed Puts New Focus on Vitriol in Politics. Times columnist Paul Krugman blamed political hatred and recalled a recent federal report on the danger of right-wing extremism.

In this case, similar to when Obama attacked the Cambridge police without knowledge of facts, then proceeded to urge "caution" when the Fort Hood massacre occurred, there is clearly opportunitsm abounding in the way the situations are handled.
Hey leftists: us CITIZENS are watching.
The media also needs to be put on notice.
This crap has to stop.
I'd accuse NPR of bad taste here, but I don't think theres a person in that entire network with a sense of humor.
Dramatic??????????????
The coverage was so over the top biased that I just turned it off and watched football all weekend.
Much less stressful. And more enjoyable.
“...The shooting spree at a Tucson Safeway on Saturday was allegedly the work of 22-year-old Jared Loughner..”
Allegedly? So, are we assume that perhaps the young skull full of mush being held in Phoenix is somehow NOT the perpetrator???
C’mon, now. Walking on eggshells around this guy like that is being just a little too careful, don’t you think?
“When government is afraid of the people there is liberty. When the people are afraid of the government, there is tyranny.” This was written by that radical, right wing extremist, Thomas Jefferson. Of course Tom was a tea party member and Palin supporter.
The Regime Media is jumping the shark with this leftist pothead, who by the way has been stalking Giffords since BEFORE PALIN WAS EVER ON THE NATIONAL SCENE!
In our legal system, until the jury pronounces guilt, the person is presumed not guilty.
I know... in this case there is little doubt, but formally, “allegedly” is still correct.
Golly, I must have been in the restroom during Obama’s “dramatic moment of silence” for the victims of the Ft. Hood massacre.
Ugh... it’s too early in the morning for that level of sarcasm.
These people are.
“In our legal system, until the jury pronounces guilt, the person is presumed not guilty.”
With all due respect, MrB...
Screwww THAT! I know it’s how the system works. I have the right to pronounce him guilty right now and I’ll continue to do so.
Sure, “alleged” is “legally correct” language but “guilty” is the absolute truth of the matter. There can be no denying, it is the horrible and sad reality...I don’t owe that bastard one iota of the benefit of the doubt.
Now, I’m not a juror, lawyer, judge or executioner. I’m just someone who’s getting mighty tired of people not having the courage to call a spade a spade!
Remember President Nixon? Well, he was also a lawyer but that didn’t stop him from pronouncing Charles Manson guilty of the Tate-LoBianca murders during a live press conference, did it?...and that didn’t keep the juries from finding he and his “family” GUILTY of capital murder and their receiving much-deserved death sentences, did it?
Nixon had the will to do it and he had it “in spades”...just like he had when he ordered the 1972 Christmas bombings of Hanoi.
Remember when Mayor Bloomberg said the New Years’ Eve bomber was probably someone who opposed Obamacare? The left practically brags about throwing around accusations without facts, but they’ll never link any terrorist to Islam.

Notice that in the second paragraph above, Jared Loughner "allegedly" did the shooting. In the first paragraph, there is no "allegedly" used, "blamed the shooting on inflammatory right-wing rhetoric.".
There you have it, as far as the MSN is concerned the shooter is innocent until proven guilty, but conservatives are guilty until proven innocent. Kinda nice how that works out.
This is going to blow up in their faces like a trick cigar. I’m popping corn over here.
Let’s talk about political vitriol.

What a misleading headline! NOwhere in the article is there ANY reference to, let alone facts about, ANY widespread "backlash" by ANYone other than a few pundits here and there.
Having such double standards seems to be business-as-usual for the left. Whether it’s genetic or a learned behavior, I have no idea!
