Sales of semi-automatic Glock handguns have surged since Jared Loughner gunned down six and injured 14 more, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on the weekend.
According to Bloomberg, one-day sales of pistols in Arizona leapt 60% on January 10 - the Monday after the shooting, compared to the previous week.
The owner of two Arizona gun shops told Bloomberg the store was "at double our volume over what we usually do.”

Same thing here, I much prefer the grip angle of the XD (or 1911) to that of the Glocks I’ve owned. My XD45Compact is virtually the same size of the G19 I had, but I also prefer the 11rnds of .45ACP with the short mag in the XD45C.
The 9mm proved very deadly last Saturday in Tucson.
The most important part of CCW is safety and practice. Many people cannot afford to shoot a few hundred rounds at a time of .357, .40, .44, or .45 at the range and/or they cannot handle the blast from those rounds, which means that the first shot better be perfect because there may not be an accurate second or third shot.
I carry a Springfield XD 9mm Subcompact because I know that I can reliably place five shots in the kill zone in a couple of seconds at 25 yards or less, and I don't have the same confidence with the higher calibers. Also, in case you haven't noticed, Cor-Bon, Speer, Federal, and Remington make high velocity, jacketed hollow point 9mm +p rounds that are as effective as the higher calibers, particularly if you need a second or third shoot.
This is why the 9 is so widely used in rapid-fire shooting matches. But for protecting myself and my family, the 9 won't even be found anywhere near the nightstand.

As far as rapid fire confidence, that's why the 1911 is so devastating as a rapid fire platform. The heavier design tames the massive recoil to that which is somewhat less than a Glock shooting 9’s. You can keep those low grain .9mm lightly built hollow points. They won't provide lethal penetration like the kind needed to produce one shot lethality. Extra velocity won't make up the difference either without Sectional Density or mass to back it up.

I've shot many Glocks over the last 15 years and I cannot get used to the odd grip angle, plastic sights, and the fact that there is no external safety. Carrying a hot Glock is akin to carrying a hot 1911 with the safety off.
That being said, I'm a fan of Sig Sauer, Heckler & Koch and 1911s (a few are in my FR profile page).

No such animal. Either a P6 single stack 9mm or a double stack P226 in 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 Sig.
I didn't have that issue with the XD. I like the Compact version with the two different mag lengths, too. One makes it reasonably small and concealable with 11 rounds of .45, the other extends the grip length and gives you 13.
Slick piece of design work, that.
Got my SMC FEG 918 9x18. does the trick. All steel, safety, smallish but controllable, puts ‘em where I aim.
You can get a brand new DA/SA polymer based SigPro SP2022 for $450. I have one and it has a fantastic DA pull. It feels more solid than a Glock.

I have a Colt Govt. Model that’s been with me longer than my last 2 wives. It not only looks better than they do now, it still functions perfectly and shoots better than I can see these days.
I picked up a Colt Defender a year ago that I use as one of my carry pieces. After about 200 rounds through it, there ain’t enough O’s in smooth...
I carried a sidearm in Viet Nam too. You guessed it, a Colt.
The Sig P26 is like the Glock G7 that can go undetected through airport security.

I agree. Glocks are a price point bargain, reliable, but because of the action, probably the worst handgun option for a beginner.
