The Makarov is very good, at least the surplus E. German and Bulgarian ones. I like that it is all steel and has a traditional safety. It is probably the best value out there.

The grip is to wide and it feels like you are holding a brick in your hand.

Agree. Actually, I prefer single-stack guns in general. The only double stack guns I can shoot worth anything are the Browning High Power and the CZ 75/85.

Different strokes for different folks. The M&P's feel very nice, I have held them at the local shops. In a 9mm I'm partial to Glock and CZ. The CZ P-01 fits my hand as if it were custom made for it.

I've fired Glock, CZ, HK, Sig, Springfield Armory, Kimber, Colt, S&W, Beretta and can't knock the quality of any of those brands.

Ah, Makarovs. I have a Polish P-64. I think it is the smallest pistol that chambers the 9mm Mak. It kicks like a hot .357 Magnum...or maybe even worse.

But I love it anyway.

I don't like Glocks either, they roll up too badly due to muzzle jump because they are built too light. My Colt 1911 is extremely reliable, seriously balanced and does not tend to roll away from the aim point like a Glock does. They are much easier to keep on target. They were designed and built to tame the heavy recoil of the 45 ACP.

I will take the Colt 1911 every time over a Glock.

That's OK, because as a fan of the classics, I use those old-school black powder muzzleloading Glocks that my forefathers used.

Didn't they use the trusty six-shooter Glocks in the Old West?

I have real issues against the 9 mm. It is a pathetic round compared to the .357, 44 mag or 45 ACP.

If I were a perp, I would prefer that anyone defending themselves use a 9. I would stand a much better chance of walking away from that pathetic round, able to recover and offend another day. The only one more pathetic than that round is the .38 Special.

I completely agree. I think the Glock--despite how well it performs--just looks too boxy.

I have an M&P .40, that I really love. It fits my hand, and points well to my tastes.

Somebody better get ahold of genius Republican Peter King who just had a news conference with Mayor Bloomberg to propose new gun control laws. What an effing idiot.

And what kind of gun control law would have prohibited this tragedy? Does Lil' Petey really think that this psycho would have obeyed a law that prohibits a person from possessing a firearm within 1000 feet of certain elected politicans? As for the rest of us, how are we supposd to know whether the person passing us on the street is a "protected politician" under Lil' Petey's law? What would have likely prevented this tragedy is the Pima County Sheriff's Deparment taking the many complaints about Loughner seriously.

I own 9mm, .357, and .22lr though for HD it's a 12 gauge. Eventually I'll pick up a .45, most likely a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded Parkerized and then perhaps a Glock in .45.

I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of any of those calibers you mentioned. Shot placement is the key. Though .45 ACP is the only round I'd trust using FMJ for SD.

I went through a 1911 period and went back to Glocks. There is no “perfect” gun, that’s why there are so many makes and model. How a gun fits it your hand, the ergonomics, trigger pull, etc. are all factors and we all don’t think alike.

I like Glocks because of how they fit in my hand and how I shoot them. I am also NOT a fan of any external levers like grip safeties, thumb safeties, decockers, etc.. Safety starts in the brain and ends in the trigger finger. Spend some time at Front Sight (http://www.frontsight.com) with your 1911 and see how you feel afterwards.

Psst...Lightly used Sig P225(P6)s are currently available at J & G Sales for $340.

I've had a P225 about 15 years. Single stacker (8-round mags), thin profile, smooth handling, never a problem; safe and sound machinery.

That reminds me, I’ve been planning on picking up one of the those boat anchors in .45 caliber, with an extra mag. Those throwbacks are very dependable and accurate at the vision ranges I would use one. Nightstand anchor, so to speak.

I've only shot one once, and it felt "weird," like I could feel the frame flex.

Now, I doubt I could shoot one, due to my arthritis, making it difficult and painful to have a really firm grip required by a Glock.

I am not a GG a/k/a "Glock Groupie." I have shot the 9's, .40's, and .45's in both the service and subcompact models, and I just don't like the feel in my hand and I don't like the safety features. The CCW that I carry every day is a Springfield XD 9mm Subcompact (3" barrel). I also have a Springfield XD 9mm with the 4" barrel, which I use for sport. The Springfield XD, whether the 9mm, .40, or .45, the 3" barrel, 4" barrel, or 5" barrel, shoots straight out of the box with no hiccups or breakin required (I wish I could say the same for the high-priced Walther and Kahr).

Don’t feel too bad. The SKS has appreciated pretty well also... :)

Russion SKSs are selling at the local gun shows for 4X what I paid years ago, and Chinese versions for 3X. Unfortunately, mine were lost in a boating accident. If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all!

At one show in the early 90’s, a guy had a whole table of British Lee-Enfield SMLE rifles for $69 each. I bought one to check it out with the intention of coming back for more if the barrel was good (they were all packed with cosmoline). It was great, but I never found any more after that. I wish I’d bought a bunch of them, and lots of SKSs...

That's why he 1911 is my favorite. It not only delivers the round where you send it, it keep on sending accurate follow-up, round after round in the same place. Not many humans will walk away from the power of this round!
