Texas Gov. Perry Moves to Ban 'Sanctuary Cities,' Protect Private Property

The Texas State Legislature, while struggling to close a $15 billion dollar budget deficit without raising taxes, will also deal with the issues of sanctuary cities and protecting private property from being seized under eminent domain.

According to the Austin American Statesman, Gov. Rick Perry has declared the two issues as "emergencies" so they can move through the legislature on a fast track.

The policy of police departments in certain cities to not inquire as to the immigration status of people who are arrested for other crimes or otherwise come in contact with the police has been termed by opponents of the policy "sanctuary cities" as it protects illegal immigrants from local police inquiries.

Proponents maintain this allows illegal immigrants to give information to the police without fear of being deported. Proponents also maintain it is not the job of the local police to enforce federal immigration laws.

Opponents counter that the policy of "sanctuary cities" constitutes a de facto amnesty for an entire class of criminals. Regardless of the intentions of illegal immigrant to make better lives for themselves by living and working in the U.S., they have violated the law by entering the country illegally.

Sanctuary Cities and States Information Resource suggests that the following Texas communities are sanctuary cities: Austin, Baytown, Brownsville, Channelview, Denton, Dallas, El Cenizo, Fort Worth, Houston, Katy, Laredo, League City, McAllen, Port Arthur and San Antonio.

I do not trust Perry will follow through with this.He has been known more of a friend to illegals. Obama will file a lawsuit against Texas. With all these states wanting to crack down on illegals, how many lawsuits will Obama file or will he await AZ one ?

Yeah, but God bless Texas. At least your legislature is banning “sanctuary cities”. Will y’all save me and my family an acre or two for when y’all secede from the Union?

He has been known more of a friend to illegals.

Not as much as political opportunists have accused him of. Look up Operation Linebacker and Operation Rio Grande- both of which were blocked by the feds. He has made several bold attempts to do something about the border that the federal government blocked.

****

With high crime, high taxes, Democrat politicians, and school districts no one should send their kids too.

With a $15 billion deficit, it seems that Perry has already done a lot of damage to Texas. These tiny cuts are not going to fix that.

My kids live in Denton. The majority of their street is from south of the border and I would BET most are illegal. This may help their property value which has gone down the tubes.

HOPE Perry sticks to his guns.

The more the fed monkeys around with states issues the more people will come out and vote against this facist regime.(I include the bush regime as well)Georgia is proof this is in the works because the rat governor candidate got his hat handed to him in november and one of the main reasons was illegals in the state of Georgia.

Speaker Straus is not likely to let the Sanctuary City bill get to the floor without it being watered enough to satisfy his masters, the Democrats.

CA has hundreds of billions just in pension liabilities that they cannot pay. 15B doesn't sound like all that much for a big state.

Or are you one of the Gov Goodhair haters?

He's not perfect, but he's not running for president, and the legislature is more conservative than it used to be.

You’re talking about the debt. I’m talking about the deficit.

OK. But I know some libs in TX who are caterwauling about the deficit there...as if thy ever cared about a deficit before. And immediately follows is the Gov Goodhair bashing. Yada-yada "Goodhair"...same kind of line about Bushhitler.

I'm not saying he's wonderful, but I'm just skeptical of the rhetoric. I'm sure, like all states, there's a painful shortfall to be confronted. But a lot of states envy you your governor.

I would not be surprised if there were close to a million illegals in Texas. A concerted effort to expel them would save $Billions, in terms of expenses for schools, emergency room services, welfare, crime, etc.

Hell yes they are!
Put Fort Worth at the top of the list.
The jerk Mayor Moncrief who drapes himself in the consrvative flag has been catering to the illegals for so long, Fort Worth’s southside now looks like little Mexico.
Anything the legislature does to stop the destruction of our country. Legal immigration is the only way.

Agreed. I like what Perry says NOW. If he’d been saying it all along and following thru, he might be Presidential material.

I am originally from New Jersey, then moved to Houston, TX. After a few years there I called one of the managers that I worked with. His secretary answered, said he was in a meeting. BTW, she’s East Texas. Then she asked me if I was Lee xxxxxx. Lee’s a good old boy from Beaumont, who thinks anyone from north of Conroe is a Yankee. I told her who I was, added originally from New Jersey, and then asked that if she mistook me for Lee xxxxxxx, if I could turn in my Texas green card and become a fully naturalized Texas Citizen. She replied “Texas is now your home”.

I miss Texas! I try to get down there twice a year. My real home is with family in Fredericksburg.

I live just NW of Houston and although I am not exactly a Rick Perry fan, I moved my family here from CA (S.F. Bay Area) about eight years ago. The best damn decision I have ever made in my life. This place ain’t perfect but we’re working on it! And any place that keeps re-electing Ron Paul is OK in my book.

GOD BLESS TEXAS!

His concern to protect citizens from emminent domain comes as a surprise considering his energetic support of the Trans-Texas Corridor.

I guess anybody can get religion.
