Coble seeks repeal of light bulb standard

GREENSBORO — U.S. Rep. Howard Coble is among those urging colleagues in Congress to turn off the lights on a controversial provision of the 2007 energy bill.
The Greensboro Republican is a co-sponsor of a bill to repeal what some refer to — erroneously — as the incandescent bulb ban. Texas Reps. Joe Barton and Michael Burgess and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, all Republicans, were the original sponsors of the repeal measure.
The legislation is a long way from passing, but it is in keeping with Republican pledges to roll back laws they see as interfering with personal freedoms.
“It seems to me the Congress and the government is inserting its oars in waters where it doesn’t need to go,” Coble said Tuesday, adding that people ought to choose which kind of light bulb they want to use for themselves.
“This ought to be a personal decision rather than being an edict from on high.”

Not that I was planning on listening to the Nanny State Government ANYWAY (if need be, I’ll stockpile a room full of light bulbs rather than submit to this Fascist edict that I use those dreadful mercury-laden twirly things to see by).
Have they outlawed candles yet?
You can get incandescent light bulbs rated for 25,000 hours that are used by the hospitality industry. If you use them for an average of 7 hours a day they’ll burn out in just a little under 10 years and cost about a buck or less per bulb depending on how many you buy.

Once you stock up all you’ll have to do is watch out for the light bulb police who’ll be monitoring everyone who might be using those unauthorized, evil incandescents!

They DAMNED WELL BETTER rescind the mosat stupid of bills ever passed!! If they don’t do it, then there ISN:T a dime’s worth of difference!
But wasn’t Coble the original sponsor of the bill to force the change?...and then he had a change of heart?
If what it is doing is banning incandescent bulbs, then guess what, it is a ban!

I’m right there with you. This ban is ridiculous; those stupid pig-tail bulbs don’t even fit in my ceiling fixtures.
I’ve been stocking up on the old fashioned bulbs for a year now....I guess if they repeal it (which I hope they do), the gubbmit will rob me of another investment for my future!
Need a picture of a lightbulb (incandescent, of course) over Coble’s head.
Don’t forget the bill that limited the amount of water a toilet could use during flushing.
That one came up for repeal a couple of years ago and the RINOs ran scared.
We’ll be watching what these clowns do closely; but I don’t think they quite understand this, yet.

No, actually, I spent Christmas in a house with all the new twirly bulbs, and came out determined to not submit. I hate the things.
Many pundits have noted the wiggle room between a stated ban and an unstated but de facto ban, one which Obama particularly exploits quite often ("there is nothing in this bill that will prevent Americans from keeping their current doctors and current health care plans...").
In this case, the reference is "erroneous" only because it is impossible to make an incandescent light bulb that meets the new "energy efficiency standards", which were certainly created specifically for that purpose:
The 2007 bill sets energy efficiency standards for light bulbs. It doesn’t specifically ban incandescent bulbs, but it would phase out the cheap, 50 cents-a-piece, single-filament model based on Thomas Edison’s century-old design.

I had something similar about 2-1/2 years ago. I bought a 3 way CF bulb (3 light levels) and it had been in use for the entire 2.5 years when it exploded with smoke and a noise like a gunshot and sprayed some nasty fluid onto the lampshade. I had to clean the mess up and then replace the lampshade. I have no idea what the foul smelling liquid was.
Good, get government out of my bedroom! . . . and the rest of my house too!
Dang! I just filled my two car garage with incandescents and planned on making a killing on eBay! dang dang dang!

Oh, I see! "Prohibits from selling" isn't the same as "ban possession." Nice try, Binker. End result? Exactly the same. "Prohibits" just takes a bit longer.

We’ve had a few bigger mercury/flourescent bulbs literally explode at work. Luckily, no one was near them at the time.
Even if this repeal goes through, looks like I have a near lifetime supply of incandescents sitting on my shelves...
