New jobless claims post biggest jump in 6 months

(Reuters) - U.S. jobless claims jumped unexpectedly last week to their highest level since October, suggesting the labor market is still in a rut despite signs of improvement in the economy.

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose to 445,000 from an upwardly revised reading of 410,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said on Thursday. It was the biggest one-week jump in about six months, confounding analyst forecasts for a small drop to 405,000.

A Labor Department official noted the rebound occurred following the holidays, which may have hindered reporting of new claims and created a backlog.

Continuing claims retreated sharply to 3.88 million from 4.13 million, a potentially encouraging sign. However, the total number of Americans on benefit rolls, including extended benefits under emergency government programs, jumped to 9.19 million from 8.77 million.

The four-week moving average of new claims, which strips out short-term volatility in the data, rose by 5,500 to 416,500.

I think Obama is going to come to regret his Together We Thrive campaign slogan. This is thriving?

DUH!!! This stuff is starting to get me po'ed [but in a completely non-threatening way, for the record. :) ]. Claims went down in the last report but there was a major holiday involved. Duh!!! Yet the "experts," politicians, and pundits hailed it as "THE turnaround." Now the next report comes out with a big jump. Gee, who could have seen that coming? Everybody EXCEPT the "experts," politicians, and pundits. For crying out loud.

Look, maybe we're attuned to the hypocrisy from the formulaic reporting meme on display in Tucson, but haven't we seen enough of these jobless reports that we know the "experts" don't have a clue, the politicians spin out of reflex, and the pundits are really just PR flacks?

Why hasn’t the media tried to pin the shooting on Obama? This guy was very frustrated because he could not find a job in the Obama economy (okay, who wants to hire a crazy guy, but that’s beside the point). If Bush was President, the guys frustration in not being able to find a job would be where the blame was pinned. It would be Bush’s fault.

To make the bad employment figures go away, Obama better invite to the White House that fake Tonto guy who last night prayed to Mother and Father Earth and other pagan, animistic and pantheistic deities to protect and bless all four and two-legged creatures of the earth, including those who "slither across the ground" on their undersides.

We need all the prayers we can get, even from the University of Arizona's own version of Perfesser Ward ("I've been bleeped out of Huckleberry Finn !") Churchill.

“Funny. “Each week the “Experts” feed us another line of bs telling us how much better our economy is getting”

and there was that report that “proved” Fox news viewers were misinformed, they all feel the economy is getting WORSE instead of the glowing happy land we are morphing into.

I didn’t see the memorial service, but Drudge has pictures of t-shirts with “together we thrive.” What’s with the t-shirts? Was this a political rally? Oh, wait, it was the Obozo campaigning, wasn’t it?

No one is talking about that. The unemployment dips and they’re calling it recovery.

If a record number of people are failing for unemployment, and unemployment has been extended, shouldn’t that be reflected in the unemployment rate?

I would think we’ll hit 10% by the summer.

***** “ despite signs of improvement in the economy. *****

1. Free ride for the so called “banks.”

2. Free ride for the Beltway gang.

3. Free ride for the Bureaus.

4. Free ride for Congress.

5. Free ride for the backdoor bailout of the media (with the same guaranteed employment of the same old mouths)

6. Free ride for business in China.

7. Free ride for govt. pay hikes to offset food and fuel (but not for everyone else).

8. Free ride for more govt. regulations and tax plan millstones.

The fact that the EXPERTS are “confounded” by this number leaves *me* confounded!

Too bad I can’t pick a Super Bowl winner as easily.

Who would have ever guessed that the seasonal help that was laid off after the Christmas (there.... I said it publicly...)buying season would seek unemployment benefits in early January!

The Nation can be unified in the Unemployment lines.

New slogan for the Democrats “Brother, can you spare a dime?”

Or “Senior, can you spare a peso?”

The market for “Experts” is still strong and apparently there are no credentials necessary to enter it.
