Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) kicked off his book tour Thursday with a speech at the National Press Club that included a staunch defense of a potential rival for the GOP nomination former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Pawlenty slammed Palin critics, who he said made "instant judgments" on the basis of "incomplete facts" in the hours after the Tucson shooting that killed at least six people and critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 13 others.
"In those early hours and early days, she was falsely accused," Pawlenty said. "People came flat out and blamed her for that incident and the facts, as we know them today, don't bear that out."
In an interview with The New York Times earlier this week, Pawlenty took what was perceived as a swipe at Palin, telling the paper he would not have made the map she used on her Facebook page that included crosshairs over the district of Giffords and other Democratic lawmakers who voted for healthcare.
But on Thursday, Pawlenty defended her and others on the right from those he said made snap judgments about who's to blame for the incident, something he said was similar to what he endured in Minnesota after the collapse of the Interstate 35 bridge in the summer of 2007.

Good for Tpaw
TOO LATE.
Two jabs at Palin too many. I’m guessing after his latest jab he’s backtracking. To me, after he did that, he’s not different than Obama. Because he jabbed at Palin, for his own political gain, and now wants to sell us books!
Not me. Not me...
It was like a media mob. Shameful.
He’s right. It is a blatant political attempt to blame Palin and the Tea Party.
He’s been behaving rather badly recently, but good for him on this.
Better late than never.
This episode should be a teaching moment for all GOP Presidential Candidates. Namely, the left will do anything to tear down each and every candidate.
The GOP candidates need to realize their opponent is radical left and not let the radical left start fights among GOP candidates.
Ditto
Ha Ha Sure is funny (to the media) when a democRat says it.
Good. That means we are only three weeks from Mittens Romney speaking up.
Now, after doing exactly what the libs did, he crawfishes and stoops to her defense by condemning them -- for doing what he just did.
And I didn't see any apology or "mea culpa" between his two statements.
~~~~~~~~~
Pawlenty just kicked himself down below even Romney on my list -- and that is pretty da*ned low...
Paws seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth!
.
That’s paw-lenty nice of him. Trying to earn points now!
It’s not that she was “falsely accused.” She shouldn’t have even been in the story at all. These people are stupid...Pawlenty included for even giving credence to the issue.
Where were the other Republicans defending Sarah? Can we even name any? Just silence. That’s not good enough. We are looking for leaders and right now it seems that Sarah stands alone.
They haven’t been. There’s such a long time to go yet, if she can just keep and add to her momentum they will have to change their attitudes!
She is always a few steps ahead of the also rans. Maybe she won't get the nomination, but unless some of these other guys show some gutsy leadership the best they can hope for is the VP slot behind Sarah.
