'Homophobic' Dire Straits hit Money For Nothing banned from radio... 26 years after its release

It may be a classic rock song but 26 years after it was first released Dire Straits hit Money For Nothing has been banned from radio.

The song was ruled too offensive for the airwaves in Canada because it contains the word 'f****t' and can now no longer be played in its original form.

Any station that wants to play the song will have to edit it or disguise the word, according to ruling by the Canadian Broadcasts Standards Council.

The decision came after a listener complained that the broadcast of unedited version of the song – which mentions the word three times – was 'extremely offensive' to gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

The songs second verse contains the offensive word three times. It says: ‘The little 'f****t' with the earring and the makeup. Yeah, buddy, that’s his own hair'

‘That little 'f****t's' got his own jet airplane. That little 'f****t' he’s a millionaire'.

The entire verse is edited out of some versions of the song, or the word is simply replaced.

The council concluded that 'f****t'. when used to describe a homosexual man, is a word 'that, even if entirely or marginally acceptable in earlier days, is no longer so.'

'The societal values at issue a quarter century later have shifted and the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985.'

Co-written in 1985 by Mark Knopfler and Sting, Money For Nothing is penned from the perspective of a working class man who spends his time watching music videos and comments on what he sees.

In an interview with Rolling Stone around the time the song was released Knopfler said: ‘I got an objection from the editor of a gay newspaper in London - he actually said it was 'below the belt.'

It reminds me of when the Stones were on Ed Sullivan and they made them cut the line “I can’t get no girlie action...” from the song.

They do this all the time.

The movie “The Dam Busters”, which is one of the great war movies ever made, is very rarely ever shown.

The reason is that the protagonist Wing Commander Guy Gibson is accurately portrayed as having a dog named “Nigger”.

They can’t cut the scenes out without messing up the movie, so they just don’t show it.

And the Left will deny that they are denying free speech in the interest of “can’t we all get along.” It will be interesting to watch what words will be denied in the coming weeks after Tucson. We’ve already heard a few. Fascinating, somewhat frightening, times we live in.

Methinks you might be a Shakespeare fan.

Remember when they sang “Let’s Spend *some time* Together”?

Speaking of rap ...

Standing on the front stoop, hangin' out the window
Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes blow
Crazy lady livin' in a bag
Eating out of garbage pails, used to be a fag-hag

"The Message - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five"

This lyric is from a composition considered to be one of the cornerstones of modern rap.

And then there was Jim Morrison, who was told not to sing "Higher", on "Let My Fire." He not only sang "Higher" he gave it extra emphasis when he sang it.

Will they allow Van Morrison’s “Blue Money”

You search in your bag
Light up a fag
Think it’s a drag
but you’re so glad
To be alive honey

“And then there was Jim Morrison...”

Ah, but at least he didn’t reprise his Miami Florida performance (Charlie Crist’s pardon not withstanding)!

Besides the soft-fascist aspect of banning the song, what I see is the typical leftist condescension. They know full well that it was written from an in-character POV, but they don't think the average joe is capable of understanding that. Thus, as they see it, for the ignorant average mind the song serves as a reinforcement of bigotry.

In other words, the proles are too stupid to get the irony, so ban it.

The first time I heard the song I installed 600 yards of carpet in 18 hours, in a huge room, boombox full out. Played it over and over.

I thought liberals weren’t in favor of censorship??? Oh, that’s right, their only in favor of censorship when it applies to everyone else!

I’m going to call my local radio stations and ask them to play this song and I will boycot their sponsors if they dont’!

Turns out the line with the word faggot in it appears in the iTunes sample of the song. Love it. I bought it ($1.29) just to show my support. In your face PC idiots.

Methinks you might be a Shakespeare fan.

My choice was between "Oberon," "Theseus," or "Puck." My choice should not be construed to reflect that I am in any current sense "King of the Fairies."
