Actor John Dye, best known for his role in the CBS drama, "Touched By an Angel," died this week in San Francisco, according to his family. He was 47.

His brother, Jerre Dye, told an online paper in Memphis that Dye suffered a fatal heart attack Monday. His family said they kept the death private until they could organize a memorial in Mississippi.

Actress Valerie Bertinelli, who co-starred with Dye in the CBS show, tweeted, "Dear, sweet John Dye, rest in peace."

John Dye made his way up the ranks as an actor in the '80s and early '90s making appearances on series like "The Young and the Restless" and "Murder She Wrote."

So sorry he went so young. The one thing that always gives hope. The moment he drew his last breath, he went straight into the arms of God.

You would think that with a gentle face like that he would not have been 'the death angel', but the show was a Christian perspective type show. There was not one show that you wouldn't want middle school kids watching.

He played the Angel of Death. His first assignment was Abraham Lincoln.

He once said in an interview that the worst part about his role on Touched by an Angel was when he traveled. He said the reactions he got when he sat next to someone on an airplane were priceless.

I also remember him in the Seinfeld episode, where he was going through a “10 step” program. He wouldn’t let George borrow a sweater, because he didn’t want George’s big head to stretch out the neckhole. George demanded an apology for the “making amends” step.

He played the Angel of death, right? How strange that he met the real one. Prayers for his family. He was so very young.

You’re confused. That was James Spader who played the role of Jason Hanky.

RIP John Dye.

Bertinelli was only in 44 of the shows 212 episodes. IIRC she was off and on during her first couple of seasons but after that became a permanent cast member until the show ended.

How about the one lecturing about the evils of the "McCarthy Era" and the poor oppressed Commie Hollywood artists?

Thanks - it seems like I can remember her a bit - I loved the show, although I’m sure I didn’t watch all the years it was on

I missed that episode. But it is not surprising for such sludge to even inveigle a show Like Touched because writers come and go and new writers are given a try-out occasionally. I recall how Taxi had a few dead shows because of a change in writers. It’s happening currently to CSI and NCIS. I would bet both shows have new writers because there are not so subtle changes happening in the themes.
