Yeah, sadly its probably true that what Hollywood produces reflects the market at large, or at least the portion of the market that does the most discretionery spending.
Teenage girls today think Lee Marvin is icky.

Why do they keep getting scrawny runts to play Spidey? Because Spidey is a scrawney runt. In the comic he is thin, wirey and shorter than 6 foot. I believe he is either 5'8 or 5'10. There are other major super heroes that are short also. Wolverine is 5'8.

Lee Marvin is icky, like most people who have been dead for over 20 years....

I can’t think of too many tough-guy younger actors, but I would say Jeff Bridges (chiefly because of his role as Rooster Cogburn), Dwayne Johnson, Michael Clarke Duncan can fulfill tough-guy roles.

Dead for over twenty years and still a better actor than Robert Pattison.

First time something hits that silly helmet, his nose is crushed. (Well, in the real world at least.)

I’ll toss out Mark Valley (the Human Target series), Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Chuck), maybe Nathan Fillion. Others? Hmmmm
Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Tim Dekay (White Collar).
I frankly think the problem (or much of it) is the ‘pretty factor’. Most of the so called stars are pretty boys. They may be able to (physically) do the job, but they don’t have the looks that say ‘tough guy’. They’ve been too well taken care of. No Charles Bronson or Lee Marvin to be seen.
IMHO, of course.

Kiefer Sutherland is one. Matt Damon is pretty badass in the Bourne series (love those flicks). Matt’s butt buddy, Ben Affleck is a big pussy though and hardly comes across as badass in any flick he’s been in. In fact, Affleck best portrays himself in Chasing Amy as a yuppy.

He doesn't have to be. And the kid did grow into a man throughout the comics:
