Woman hiding in closet calls 911 on burglar

The Cook County Sheriff's office says a homeowner hiding in a closet armed with her phone was able to stop the burglary of her west suburban home and nab the culprit.

The suspected burglar was captured in the northwest suburbs. Bradley Ott, 26, is also suspected in a series of burglaries in Franklin Park, Norridge and Elmwood Park.

The break-in took place Tuesday at a home in unincorporated Leyden Township near Franklin Park.

On Friday, authorities released a portion of the dramatic 911 call made from a closet in the home.

Cook County sheriff's police say the alleged burglary was just the latest in a string of robberies committed by Ott.

"It's an individual who has a drug problem, and what he was doing was stealing, which is the norm here. They steal to feed their drug habit," said Sheriff Tom Dart, Cook County Sheriff's Department.

Ott allegedly broke a window to gain entry into the home on Tuesday after knocking on the door and getting no answer.

Unbeknownst to the 26-year-old suspect, a woman and her young son were inside hiding in a closet.

"Everybody was fortunate in the sense that no one was harmed here, but for an individual to be breaking into homes where there's people inside like that, small children, there's a high potential for danger," said Dart.

"Armed" with a phone?

I guess that's the best you can hope for in Chicago.

Be civil! You can’t say “armed with a phone” anymore.

You have to say “was holding a phone”, until they outlaw “holding” as some kind of capitalist secret language for having a bank account.

May be the norm in Chicago, but not where I live.

"It's an individual who has a drug problem, and what he was doing was stealing, which is the norm here. They steal to feed their drug habit," said Sheriff Tom Dart

which is more the reason to legalize drugs. That way, he would be stealing to support his legal drug habit.

Nah, nah, nah, as the goat would say. Just legalize stealing then it is ‘borrowing to support the drug habit.’

Sad isn’t it? I’ve been refuting moonbat liberals for so long, I can think like them now. ... If you can’t blame someone else for crime, make it legal so the once victims are now the culprits for infringing on the rights of the ‘unfortunate’.

This same thing happened to my dad. The rest of the family was out of town, and he heard a noise downstairs, then heard someone coming up the wooden stairs. Dad dragged the phone into a closet, and dialed the operator and asked for the police.

Almost immediately, the burglar opened the closet door and seemed surprised to see Dad, which is weird, since the phone card led from the closet to the jack on the wall, a large clue that someone was in the closet on the phone.

The crook said “Hello, Sir”, and retreated. By then, the cops were lurking outside and made a good catch as the crook backed out of the window to their waiting arms.

We were very grateful at the time that this turned out well, as these types of encounters often don’t.

He is very, very lucky. The odds of that story ending up like that are extremely low.

I get really tired of this "it's just a property crime" talk by LEOs and defense attornies. Some stranger is in your home helping himself to your property. I don't care what his reason is, he's already demonstrated a willingness to break the law so why assume that he won't shoot or attack you?

Blow that sucker's head off and the problem is solved and I really don't want to hear any bleating for the defendant's "rights". Once he enters the home to commit a crime, he has no rights, as far as I'm concerned. None.

You want that flat screen, sucker? You want that necklace? It better be worth dying over. I have no sympathy for the perp. None. He gets no mercy.
