When wondering how the US Postal Service could find itself in a $7 billion hole, perhaps decisions like this might explain it. Court documents in a fraud probe involving doping allegations in Lance Armstrong’s cycling team show that the USPS paid almost $32 million for a four-year sponsorship from 2001-2004:
Even apart from the fraud allegations, the fact that USPS shelled out $32 million for this endorsement over four years seems like a good point on which to question the other decisions being made by USPS management. If Tailwind turns out to be utterly clean, they still managed to find a sucker.

That is the question.
What compounds the stupidity is that it was an endorsement for an almost exclusively international sport. Let's face it, no one give a hoot about cycling in the US. More people watch Maury Povich on Tuesdays, than watched the Tour de France on NBC in ANY year.

Evidently, they have overpaid by $75+ Billion over the last decade. One would think that would come close to erasing their deficit.
Sine they are essentially a monopoly, I question their judgment as well. Almost everyone knows the Fedex vs Post Office difference, so no ads are needed. In any case, $32 Million is too steep

You don't get it, the post office may deliver mail at the speed of a bicyclist, but it's the fastest bicyclist!
Another article mentioned that the USPS received an estimated $103.6 million of domestic value in return for their investment. That doesn’t sound too bad.
They should have paid my carrier instead - I have only gotten a small portion of mail this week, and that was on Thursday. She didn’t come Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, nor Friday. Needless to say, I’ve reported my displeasure to the USPS for all the good it will do.
They’re going to blame Monday’s snowstorm, but others around here never had their mail service interrupted. Just my neighborhood, I guess. Maybe the USPS is redlining us.

If the US Postal Service was (or is) $218.75 in debt, Lance represented $1; hardly "earth shattering" or even a remote cause of "massive debt".
Hell, if you're all about looking for "debt" and "waste", why don't you concentrate on your federal and state government.
You may not be aware, but the United States Postal Service IS the Federal Government, and they have no competition. Therefore, they have no need to advertise by sponsoring a sports figure of any sort.
How can they tell? Did they ask everyone who used postage whether they did so because of the ads? The USPS is in trouble because people like me fax and scan and email stuff instead of mailing it. My postage costs have dropped significantly since I got a scanner hooked up to my computer at work and if I can’t scan it, I fax it.
