Plus military widows get a form every year asking if they have remarried. The form must be checked, signed and returned.
I suspect there are many many elderly out there who decide to avoid the penalty by shacking up rather than pairing up legally.
We were screwed over by Met Life as well. My step father named us step kids as heirs in his life insurance, and Met Life decided we shouldn’t get any of the benefits because we weren’t “real” kids. At least the “real” kid got his benefits.
