At this point, there is not much choice. Everything, I’d say, with the exception of the military, the national debt, social security and medicare.

FReepers have a list around here somewhere.

It looks like the alphabet. EPA, NLRB, FCC, NEA, DHS...

Yet most Americans could not volunteer a program they'd be willing to see cut in order to reduce the deficit ...

Call me, CBS News. You can even reverse the charges. But you better give the person who calls me the heads up that they can expect to be on the phone for a while.

Sounds like a challenge. I'll start.

NPR, National Endowment for the Arts, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Energy, OSHA...

The deficit is $1.3 trillion. The 2010 military budget was $685 billion. You can’t eliminate all of the military spending. Even if you placated the libs and cut a massive $300 billion from the military, you’d still need $1 trillion worth of cuts to balance the budget. In short, their whining about the military is useless. You can’t balance this budget on the back of the military.

Democrats and independents were more likely to favor cuts to defense spending than Republicans,

The hell you say.

Pass a law promising jail time to any public official who directly or indirectly provides any taxpayer benefit or service to an illegal alien.

Eleminate Dept of Education.

Cut 95% of EPA’s budget..........

Defund public broadcasting, art’s.

I could go on, but it’s just too easy.

Make it an even x%, across the board, including military and everyone else. Everyone’s ox gets gored but not by any more or less than your neighbor’s ox.

2. No welfare for illegals.

3. Trim everything 10%

4. No more subsidies, grants etc

5. Slash foreign aid and UN funding

What not to cut? 10% across the board all congressional salaries, staff; defund NPR, Arts; cut in half the subsidizes for NASA, AMTRAK, farms this year and phase out over the next five; 25% cut the dept of Ed, EPA, HUD this year phase to 50% next two years, cut all FED staff by 30%, raise military pay by 10% now, privatize SS, end obamaCare.......that's just the beginning.

At this point, I see it a lot like immigration: a complete moratorium except on current applications.

As far as what to cut, I think we should obvert that to `what should we keep,’ and I can’t get past: the Department of Defense.

Adults don't count. Voters do.

Another stupid poll devised with a specific outcome in mind.

How about a poll that gives as choices:

Cut all federal employees by 50% immediately.
Cut all federal pay by 50% immediately.
Reduce all congressional staffers to a limit of two staffers per representative/senator.
Eliminate the TSA.
Eliminate the EPA.
Eliminate %75 of all education administrative staffers.

I could go on, but I think that my point is not hard to determine.

I say make everyone happy and unhappy, literally cut an equal percentage from everything. EVERYTHING!! Every program has a lot of slop, clean it up! I could do the math but we could start with something like 2% and see what happens.

I’ve known too many government entities who are out there trying to spend every cent they get just because if they don’t spend it all they won’t get higher funding the next time. They are like those food stamp recipients who weigh 300 lbs and are practically starving to death.

"...only 38 percent could name a program they would support cutting..."

The other 62% are too stupid.

.

Eliminate these:

Environmental Protection Agency

Department of Education - October 17, 1976 - Carter Administration

Department of Energy - August 4, 1977 - Carter Administration

Department of Health and Human Services

Department of Housing and Urban Development

Department of the Treasury

Department of Labor

Department of the Interior

Department of Agriculture

Department of Commerce

Independent agencies - all 50 of them

.

People are pissing and moaning about States' Rights and sovereignty. Well, let the states deal with all this crap themselves. Get the Feds out of our lives.

If I were John Boehner, at the end of 30 days with all my bills before Congress, I'd be referred to as "Boehner the Butcher," and I'd be damn proud.

Earmarks should top the list. Here is one I heard this morning on our local news. 1.5 million, half of which is stimulus money will give up to 12 free CFL bulbs to every home owner in Seattle and several neighboring communities, a plan by Seattle to jump start the use of CFL bulbs. And they have hired canvassers to distribute them from house to house, knocking on doors handing out the bulbs.

Are the people of Seattle so broke they can't go out and buy their own bulbs?

Sadly figuring this stuff out is what we elect 435 Congress critters and 100 Senators for. The public is not supposed to have to decide what programs get cut. The legislators are supposed to be competent to handle this.
