Sounds like he got discharged for drinking. I think we can safely say he's an alcoholic of 40 years, and by taking his word, has been sober for a year.
A year of sobriety after 40 years of drinking is not enough time to regain much sense of clarity. He's still an angry drunk.

This new nutcase must be the luckiest guy in the world. He's wounded by one of his fellow nutcases, is out of the hospital, and six days later is trash-talking the innocent people who are trying to figure this out. He went looking for trouble, and started it. He's lucky he was arrested and sent for a short stay at the funny farm. He might have been lynched, instead. Or at least treated to a good beating.
But he should take advantage of this, and buy every kind of lottery ticket he can lay his hands on. He's already had twice the luck of other people that day.
