Well, I guess the tyrants agree: gold is a great way to protect your wealth under adverse circumstances.
It sure is, but now everyone knows where it is. Got to be a big embarrassment for the Saudis.
I doubt they're capable.
In view of the huge "gold importation tax" the Saudis will undoubtedly exact, I think that they'll be able to live with the embarrassment.

I was surprised about how little a ton and a half of gold was worth. When I think of $1300 / ounce it seems incredible expensive, but you can get that same value of of the country in hundred dollar bills in about half a ton. In 500 euro bills it would only weight about 220 pounds.
Forget about diamonds one and half tons of gold is a girl’s best friend.

Each ton is almost exactly 32,000 troy ounces. So 1.5 X 32,000 is 48,000 troy ounces of gold. At $1350 per ounce, the amount is $64.8 million USD.
About 65.25 million dollars at $1360/oz. Of course, it will retain its value a lot longer than 220 pounds of 500 Euro bills.
