Wildlife officials have dropped their appeal of a court ruling that forces the government to revise its flawed plan to protect critical habitat for Canada lynx. The move means the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will have to reconsider areas in Colorado, Montana and Idaho for critical habitat designation...
A second plan in 2009 designated 39,000 square miles in Maine, Minnesota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington as critical habitat. But U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy last year faulted wildlife officials for excluding Colorado, where lynx are making a strong comeback, and some national forests in Montana and Idaho.
Some Colorado lynx have dispersed south into New Mexico, prompting a pending petition from environmentalists for that state to be added to lynx recovery efforts.

Sounds like a ploy to get at the Bakken oil drilling.

Hey, Jaz, I forgot to tell you: I saw another mountain lion in Decemeber near the little remote desert hamlet I call home. It ran across the road in front of me as I was driving home with a fine new box of recently purchased Franzia Chillable Red. It was seen at 3500 feet in a Joshua tree forest in northwest Arizona. I stopped the truck, but couldn't relocate it amid all the Joshuas. Apparently others in the hamlet have seen the cat too. One person told me there were actually FOUR on the mesa. I find that hard to believe, but a few other people I know have had their (big) dogs killed recently, and they all think it's a big cat (or cats).
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled as I quad the mesa from now on. I'll be carrying a little .22 revolver too. Not sure how much good that'll do me though...LOL!

I hunted deer and elk in prime mountain lion country about forty years and lived in some about fifteen. Always wanted to see one in the wild and never saw a single one. I wish you luck in sighting more.

One thing I always remember is their intense eyes. Second, their total sense that they believe that they are at the top of the food chain.

I live in a remote place and my job puts me in VERY remote places, so I always carry a buckknife with me. People laugh at that, thinking a gun would serve me better. But if (or when) I'm attacked by a lion, it will no doubt be from behind. In other words, it will be hand-to-hand combat of the bloodiest kind. I seriously believe a good knife will serve me better in such an encounter.
I hope I never find out though. You're right about those big cats. They just KNOW they're at the top of the food chain... LOL!
A strong walking stick might also be useful [ for snakes and ...]—unless the lion has the back of your neck.
A big knife also is useful for bears and two legged predators, too. Fighting like a crazy person works.
It is always a weight choice : that extra bottle of water versus the extra protection of a hand gun.
Your right about if ever attacked by a cougar it’ll be from behind.
Had an acquaintance who was bow hunting in ID, moving slow through medium forested country. He said he got a very eerie feeling and turned to find a cougar stalking him about 15 or so feet behind. It startled him so badly that when he turned he stumbled and fell backwards and the cat just watched, fortunately it didn’t attack. He was carrying a sidearm and drew and fired though didn’t hit it, the cat fled.
This guy is big, well over 6 feet with a heavy frame. He said he had no doubt that cat would have attacked had he not turned. He also said it scared the devil out of him.

A fluke thing. It’s the only incident I know of like that and I know a lot of hunters. I have always checked my six from time to time when hunting, after hearing that I checked it a lot more. :-)
Walking alone : I often turn around to see what is gaining on me.
With other hikers , I often walk last to protect the group.
I hate it when I hear noises behind me.
Short memory, apparently... or thinks everyone else has.
