Ex-dictator Jean-Claude `Baby Doc' Duvalier taken into custody

PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Haitian police took Jean-Claude Duvalier to a courthouse in downtown Port-au-Prince Tuesday afternoon after he was taken into custody. Charges remained unknown.

Heavily-armed police picked up the long-ago toppled dictator known as ``Baby Doc'' at the posh Karibe Hotel in Petionville two days after his surprise return from exile. He said nothing as he escorted through the back of the hotel, but a companion laughed when asked if Duvalier was being arrested.

Reminds me of that last scene in the movie “Dogs of War” where the exiled despotic leader returns and declares: “But I am the President!” followed by actor Christopher Walken pulling his sidearm and shooting him dead! Hahahah!

Well, it really was B.Doc's father who was the tyrant...one mean dude in every way. His son was just 19 when he took office or there abouts. His mother or Aunt basically controlled things until he was older. He inherited a bad name via his father...even on the news today those who remember his father see B.Doc as “a shadow” of what life was like under that tyrant.

I don't profess to know all about Haitians but enough that whoever is in control will have to carry a big stick to get any stability there. It's a drug traffic port big time...and lawlessness is second nature to many, and many remain deep into Voodoo practices and superstitions so it's not going to be a big comeback no matter who is in office. Even their catholic Priests and Mayors were known to be Voodoo Priests so you see Haitians problems are not going to be solved, but maybe some civil discourse possible along the way.

As many Haitians have stated...at least when B.Doc was leading you could walk on the streets without fear. So it does remain to be seen.

I don’t think he has any connections with the Clintons or anyone else. Aristide was Clinton’s friend, business buddy and personal voodoo priest (according to some rumors). I think Baby Doc got tired of twenty-five years languishing on history’s trash heap and decided to make his move. I think it was plain homesickness. He lost most of his fortune but was living comfortably. Hell, even Marcos wanted to go back to the Philippines before he died. Imelda did return and got back into politics. Even Noriega wanted to serve out his sentence back in Panama.

I actually believe him when he says he just wants to help out. He’d rather be remembered for doing something. At the very worst, if they shoot him, at least he’ll go out with his boots on.

And it’s a sad fact that yes, slimeball though he was, things were better under him.

The 'companion' must have already known about the WELCOME BACK BABY DOC SURPRISE PARTY at the hotel.
