Who Exactly Is James Eric Fuller?

(Investigative team notes: Heavy reliance on the contributions of @mikesus, @themick1962, @bobbi85710, @JoAnneMoretti, @arlenearmy, all of whom contributed significant pieces of the trail of internet bread crumbs to bring this story to light.)

The media frenzy over the shooting on January 8, 2011, in Arizona by Jared Lee Loughner of nearly two dozen people, including the wounding of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and the assassination of U.S. District Judge John Roll refuses to die down. The act was clearly that of a young man with a deranged mind.

It took only minutes before the acts were blamed on  Tea Party, veterans, and eventually that most dangerous weapon of all, rhetoric. The feeding frenzy grew in fever and pitch, eventually leading to the scapegoating of noted conservative leaders, including the left’s target du jour, Sarah Palin.

Emerging from this is a new “victim” over which the mainstream media is fawning, namely James Eric Fuller.

One of Loughner’s alleged victims, James Eric Fuller, went on to claim notoriety for himself on Saturday, January 15, 2011, by appearing at a town hall meeting and getting arrested for threats and intimidation.  This alone is a very interesting turn of events in the story line that hate-filled rhetoric led to Loughner’s actions. It would end here if the media and their willing mouthpieces on the left in social media had not moved immediately to excuse Fuller’s actions on the grounds of post traumatic stress disorder and other similar, nebulous grounds.

On Monday, January 17, 2011, the media moved into full fawning mode over James Eric Fuller, reporting that he had apologized for his threats at the town hall meeting. Again, the social media left whipped themselves into a frenzy, “What a man!” “See how much better we are!”

Okay, so exactly who is James Eric Fuller? What has the press looked into with this man who has foisted himself to the national spotlight so deliberately?

A quick check of court records in Pima County, Arizona, reveals that on November 24, 1997, a man by the name of Prince Eric Fuller legally changed his name to James Eric Fuller. The order was signed by Judge Lina Rodriguez under case number c323363. (View docket here.) From that point, the trail on James Eric Fuller goes cold, but the trail on Prince Eric Fuller picks up.

A simple web search for the name Prince Eric Fuller yields a huge surprise, readily available to anyone with a search engine. Before the U.S. Supreme Court a case was heard under Fuller v. Oregon, 417 U.S. 40 (1974). The case was brought by Prince Eric Fuller and involves whether or not an indigent person may be forced to pay court and other costs associated with their crime or whether the charging of such costs would violate equal protection tenets of the law. The appeal was lost, and SCOTUS affirmed that said costs could indeed be taxed to the person convicted. On its face, this appears to be a rather mundane ruling on constitutional issues.

That is, until one examines the underlying conviction: Sodomy in the Third Degree!

So, at the bottom of the pile, we find that the Prince Eric Fuller who fought the payment of costs all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court had pleaded guilty to a sexual offense. The sentence was probationary, work-release type thing so common in the past, and still too common today.

And now the only question remaining is: Is the James Eric Fuller who changed his name from Prince Eric Fuller the same person who pleaded guilty to this charge, only to become forever enshrined in the annals of American jurisprudence?

Let’s look at the remaining evidence, and the reader may draw their own conclusion.

We know from news accounts that Fuller is reported to be 63 years old. This is nearly every news account. And we do a bit more digging on the internet to see what else may turn up:

First we have his Facebook page. Of particular import is his list of friends. This information will again appear in subsequent links.

We have three Intelius reports showing name, age, and known relatives of James Eric Fuller and Prince Eric Fuller.

http://www.intelius.com/results.php?ReportType=1&qf=Prince&qmi=&qn=Fuller&qs=OR&searchform=name&trackit=74&focusfirst=0

http://www.intelius.com/results.php?ReportType=1&qf=Prince&qmi=E&qn=Fuller&qs=AZ&searchform=name&trackit=74&focusfirst=0

Note the relatives for these individuals include one of the Facebook friends.

We have USSearch.com preliminary report showing Prince Eric Fuller with a number of aliases, all of which are related to the current name of James Eric Fuller.

http://www.ussearch.com/consumer/criminal-records/names/or/prince/fuller.html

We have Lexis records that list a DOB for a James Eric Fuller of Tucson with DOB of 5/1947 and a partial SSN.

We have Lexis records that list a DOB for Prince Eric Fuller of Portland with DOB of 5/1947 and a partial SSN matching the Lexis records from Arizona.

So, the question remains, just who exactly is this new media darling, and why haven’t they looked into his past?

The blogosphere is already doing what the media should have been doing.

We leave for your perusal this final piece, “Did Eric Bohlert Research James Eric Fuller Before Championing Him?”

The answer is obviously not. There is more yet to come.

I haven't asked the powers that be. Humblegunner stated that Jim Robinson had issues with the Conservative examiner and it was shortly after that when the thread exposing Fuller as a convicted felon and possibly a pedophile was removed.

Unfortunate as the information was only available at the Examiner.com and a few low-traffic blogs. Perhaps the person(s) responsible can explain.

Not exactly.

I pointed out that the author of the piece had been banned.

"Was Prince Eric Fuller in the Navy at the same time and place as James Eric Fuller ?

Has anyone even confirmed if Fuller served in the Navy? I've seen some comments (prior to Amounpour's "townhall") from the toads over at Huffpo claiming Fuller was a Vietnam war hero suffering from PTSD. I just can't imagine a coward like Fuller charging a machine gun nest or rescuing wounded.

There was a thread on this topic yesterday that was pulled.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about a 2nd thread, one that was pulled today. At any rate, I hope this stays up and that there will be conformation, one way or the other, whether this guy changed his name. (and how he got wounded and got to the hospital)

Hmm. Fuller's name change was in '97. Arizona's law requiring registration of sex offenders was passed in '96. I'm not sure if it was effective immediately or at some later date. Prince/James Fuller is *not* in the registry.

Let's see if Sheriff Dumprick has anything to say about *that*.

Does Arizona require all sex offenders to register? In Ohio a judge must order them to register and it is not automatic. Many sex offenders are not required to register in Ohio.

Fuller’s conviction was in 1972. Seems unlikely that he would be on any sex offender list.

I just skimmed the website, but it appears that all adults convicted of such crimes must register within a certain period of time after moving to that jurisdiction.

It is possible, too, that a person could stay off the published list by going through the risk level assessment process, with the outcome of that being a "low risk" determination. Just a hunch, but I'll bet that process doesn't get used very much.

Yep, this could've pre-dated the registry just enough to avoid a registration. IIRC, there are "tiers" of offenses, some require lifetime registration, others have that requirement lapse after a certain number of years.

Some states have had to change their own laws to make their registries retroactive. I don't know if that's the case with Arizona.

I have yet to read he was any war hero.

All I have seen is that he was in the Navy and discharged for a non physical disability.

Be interesting to see if a Prince Eric Fuller served in the navy at the same a James Eric Fuller did.
