The controversy surrounding the Wake County school board's plan to assign students goes up for another debate Wednesday night. The issue is once again getting national attention – this time on a comedy show.

First, it was a story in The Washington Post, then a letter to the editor by the U.S. Secretary of Education. Now, news of Wake County public schools has turned into comedy material.

Comedian Stephen Colbert, of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, devoted five minutes to mocking the school board's assignment policies and one of its members.

So...
is the premise that poor black kids are incapable of learning unless they are sitting next to a rich white kid “racist”?

Don't forget the premise that "black and white kids won't get along unless they attend the same school because children are incapable of learning 'tolerance' unless their environment is delicately controlled by social-minded educators." And then you've got the questions: Do the individual children with study problems do any better by being shipped to a school where achievement is higher, or are they just lost in the average to make the school system look better? If they're getting bussed forty and fifty minutes away from home, how much of a drop-off in parental involvement is seen in their education?

I heard that in Charlotte the inner city schools get more than twice the amount of money than the white schools. Is that true?

Bussing for racial diversity was killed.

So they changed to name and continue the same policy.

The NAACP and libs demonstrate practically every school board meeting.

Now they are threatening to remove accreditation of all Wake Co. schools unless the board relents and approves bussing for racial diversity again.

I have no idea - I haven’t lived there in over 30 years. It would not surprise me.

I had the same experience in PG County, MD as a child. My kids are in private school here in Wake County and I will eat rice and potatoes to keep them out of WCPS. My daughter is a junior this year, one more year and we are done. Really chaps my hide that I pay taxes for schools that I get no benefit from plus I pay private school tuition.

I asked someone who graduated from Leesville high about this. She told me that there are basically two tracks. One for college-bound students and one for the rest. There really isn't much interaction between the two groups except for lunchtime. So in reality, it is all an illusion anyway.

I really believe it is a way for the educational establishment to hide what is going on and then they can scream that they need more money "for the children" so they can insure their pensions and health benefits are fully funded.

This is a fact. Students tell me one track is free play childcare complete with free lunch and the other consists of those that might want to consider college.

Hmmmmmm. “Rich” people buy homes in expensive areas of town, pay high property taxes to build schools, hire teachers. Poor people live in cheaper parts of city, pay lower property taxes. Yet people paying lower taxes get to send their kids to “rich” schools, while suckers paying exorbitant taxes are forced to send their kids to Penal Prep.

When was socialism ever fair? Hm? And...Remember, please. Government schooling is pure socialism. It is the very definition of a socialist welfare service.
