(AFL-CIO Prez) Trumka: We Are Governing From Fear
National Journal ^ | 1/19/11 | Althea Fung

AFL-CIO Pres. Richard Trumka said Wednesday that America has been lost for a decade due to questionable political choices and has fallen behind countries like China and Germany.

Speaking at the National Press Club, the president of the nation's largest labor union argued the days of doing the same old thing in Washington must end for the United States to get back on track as a competitive nation.

"We have just been through one lost decade -- when America's standard of living fell, when our wealth shrank, when millions lost their homes, when young people could not find work," Trumka said, according to prepared remarks. "What should be crystal clear right now is that the United States is falling behind in the global economy--and not because we lack the skills, the resources, the innovative drive or the entrepreneurial spirit to succeed. No, we are falling behind because we are governing from fear, not from confidence."

Here’s a novel idea Trumpka, go to China, organize some unions, and encourage them to strike as you do here.

I hate to tell Trumpka but China can collapse in a hot second if one small worker strike spreads out of control. Its one of the many things wrong with universal unionization.

Here in America Unions don’t have the power to shut the nation down....yet.

“We have just been through one lost decade — when America’s standard of living fell, when our wealth shrank, when millions lost their homes, when young people could not find work,”................................................ Yes and we priced ourselves out of the labor market. What workable solution do you have? Higher wages, more benefits, longer vacations?

In a sense, they are all unionized and occasional small strikes do occur. The small strikes are easy to deal with through appeasement but the Chinese government will only continue that for so long. The problem will come when one of those small strikes becomes a large and spreading strike like we’ve seen in Turkey, Greece, etc.

Then we will see the true face of Chinese “freedom” when the tanks arrive.

"we are falling behind because we are governing from fear, not from confidence."

He's right, but likely for the wrong reasons. We (as a country/government) have been too concerned with "image", and more importantly, avoiding backlash from the entrenched left, to have taken the gloves off and dealt with threats to this country (in all aspects, militarily and economically) as they deserved to have been dealt with.

Politically correct policies in the face of true adversity only hinder us from achieving the objectives we need to.

Richard Trumka is a terrorist who led a campaign of terror during the United Mine Workers strike in South West Virginia.

Until 9/11, none dared call it terrorism

When the government stopped being afraid of the will of the people, the country started going down hill. We need to return to that idea.

Oh, Please.

He is right about the leadership. We're dying while the leadership tell us everything is fine.

Yes -- We need more union protectionism from market competition & consumer choices. That will encourage productivity.
