"Rising Medicare and Medicaid costs are the real drivers of the United States' long-term deficit woes. "

While many if these discretionary programs needs cuts, or elimination, the REAL PROBLEM is SS/Medicare/Medicaid. Until we take those on, we're just providing window dressing.

Someone should be looking into how many FBI agents actually chase crime and how many are accountants chasing dollars. The FBI is doing more of what the little guy in “The Untouchables” wanted than the Irish beat cop. If all those FBI accountants did anything, we would be looking at fraud convictions for the housing mess and medicare fraud. It is time for a redesign of government...that should be the job of this new congress. LINE BY LINE through the budget = shake them up.

Federal layoffs would be unavoidable, the White House warns.

We can only hope so.

The Republicans are about to embark on the same horrors that Margaret Thatcher went through upon taking office as the PM in 1979. The previous Labor Party government essentially wrecked Britain. They were socialist to the core, and in their term of office virtually doubled the consumer price index, doubled unemployment, doubled the tax burden and doubled public spending.

Her struggle to de-socialize started with taking on the powerful unions. With unemployment at 30% in some cities, the battle was literally bloody, to say the least.

In order to get govt spending under control, the immediate result is unemployment. Do the Republicans have the stomach to boldly do what she did? She gritted her teeth and forged on with her unpopular policies. It's one of the reasons she became known as "The Iron Lady".

You need to read about her story. It is highly pertinent to our time, and the current predicament the Repubs find themselves:

"There is no Alternative: Why Margaret Thatcher Matters" by Claire Berlinski, Basic Books, 2008. An amazing account of an amazing conservative.

Layoffs? What is needed is permanent discharges. End these wasteful government pensions too

And 14 trillion dollars in debt will not affect people?

The federal government employs over 2.5 MILLION people and it costs hundreds of BILLIONS to employ them (and even tens of billions more that they waste). And everyone knows that there are literally hundreds of thousands of jobs that could be eliminated and no one except the “worker” would ever know it.

.....It's an entirely different matter when you actually take the scissors to $1 of every $6 spent by agencies like the IRS, the FBI, NASA and the National Park Service. Federal layoffs would be unavoidable, the White House warns.

Well that's an easy one!
IRS - cut 50%
FBI - cut 25%
NASA - cut 25%
Park Service - cut 50%
NPR - cut 100%
FDA, EPA - cut 100%
Dept of Energy - cut 100%
Dept of Education - cut 100%
State Dept - cut 50%)
Non-combat military & Pentagon - cut 50%
All foreign aid except for Israel - cut 100%

There, I just cut around $500 billion to 1 Trillion or so, in the last 10 minutes. See 0b0z0 & the demturds & RINOs? And you thought it couldn't be done.

Same old story - - nothing is said when the ticks vote in their Democrat politicians to confiscate money from me and other productive taxpayers at gunpoint so that it may be handed over to them in exchange for their votes, but when I and other taxpayers vote in politicians who will swat the grabbing hands away from our pockets, we are “effecting millions of people”.

Funny how the ticks and their politicians are never “effecting millions of people” when they confiscate their money.
