First Lady Michelle Obama donned a stunning, one-shouldered, red gown on Wednesday night for the state dinner for visiting President Hu Jintao of China.

Her color choice was a gracious nod to her Chinese guests: red, while the dominant color of the Chinese flag, also symbolizes prosperity and happiness in Chinese tradition.

The dress was designed by the label of Alexander McQueen, a beloved British designer who committed suicide less than a year ago.

Michelle Obama in commie red and black. How fitting.

I agree with that, but I can’t stomach the commie red at a state dinner for the Chinese.

Not in that particular picture but in another one I saw today, she actually looked awesome. I do think the strap should either be pulled back up or eleiminated, but still, as much as I really HATE to admit it, she looked great.

See, she CAN do it! Why does she usually look so awful!

Geesh! Hasn't she ever heard of 'garment tape'? Slouch.

There is always something not quite....right.

This time it's the black gashes or smudges. Ick.

Some kind of black pinstripe in the fabric would have been much nicer. But it seems she always has to make a rebel "statement" in her clothing.

Straps too long. Boobs too small for the dress. Probably both. Fashion FAIL.

color red could be to honor Red Chinese. I would like to think it is a reminder of the forced abortion blood of the thousands of babies and the blood of the political prisoners killed.

I agree that the dress doesn’t look like it was designed to be an off-the-shoulder dress. However, other than that, I think it is elegant and worthy of an estate dinner. I think that it minimizes Michelle’s body negatives (all of us have them and need to dress accordingly) and makes her look really nice. I’ve always thought that she photographs well (most of the time) and this dress is appropriate to the occasion.

I disapprove that the Obamas are giving Hu a lavish estate dinner at all, but since they are doing it, I guess it’s appropriate to wear Chinese red. I’m offended by the entire dinner and Obama’s kowtowing to the country trying to defeat us.

Not bad, far from the worst she’s ever looked.

And on the plus side, it was such a startling dress it kept people from looking at the odd look on Obama’s face. He’s weird.

I mostly agree. Michelle wonders into politics herself so she makes political statements about her fair. Many times she dresses in a way that is not appropriate to the occasion. That is not the case this time and I think that much of this thread about her appearance last night does not honor FreeRepublic.

I really don't get this "latest" from The Big One. . . and I don't think I want to.

Did she buy 20 yards of material for new outdoor furniture cushions, then scrap the idea and wear the material instead?

and is that some sort of insulation hanging out the bottom of the shawl... that is suppose to be a shawl, right?

Then there is Hillary showing signs of old lady dementia to pair up with hubby, Nursinghome Bubba. Just think. . . the lib's very own Barbie and Ken.

Hill use to have some sense of fashion while First Lady. . . or at least had enough sense to hire someone that did.

So is she wearing her shower curtain? That is made of plastic, right?

For some reason she has decided to act/dress (in what she percieves) a more feminine way. Longer hair, pastel colors, more makeup, and cleavage(!) She’s either planning to be a retired grandma soon or she needs to soften her image before she takes Obama off the stage and runs against Palin or Bachmann.

This is not Hillary. She’s impersonating a woman. She’s got something up her sleeve. That smile is too happy.

Reminds me of election night 2008. When all the Obamas came out dressed in red/black - Anarchist colors. Not a red/white/blue decoration on any of them.

I thought the same thing. It looked like the dress had shifted and fell off her shoulder. It was also not very well fitted. It was too tight and the flab fell over the back of the dress. Very unprofessional alteration.
