Who Will Give the GOP's State-of-the-Union Response?
The Atlantic ^ | 1-21-11 | staff

It's one of the most treasured spotlights -- and one of the most thankless tasks -- in American politics. For one night this year, a Republican will become the face of the party and offer a response to the president of the United States after he delivers the State of the Union address.

The spotlight is intense; despite the fact that the response gets a far smaller audience than the president's address, it's still watched by everyone in Washington, and by millions more around the country. It can highlight a rising star in the GOP, like last year's address in which Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell shone. Or it can be easily mocked for one outstanding feature; think of the parodies of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's performance, or of then-Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine's seemingly independent eyebrow.

The honor comes with a requirement not unlike the Hippocratic oath: Above all, just don't screw up.

The guy (Middle, far right) with the "What a lying, arrogant, narcissistic, and ignorant snob" look on his face.

Screw protocol, the SOTU address should be a hecklers den in response to the lying and disingenuous speech regurgitated by one person (Repub Pres. included). Don't like it, do the manipulative lecturing in writing.

I could care less about the GOP response since I know that they don’t really mean anything they will say in it. And the party poo-bahs certainly won’t let Sarah do it. They missed their boat with her this time last year.

How about somebody that’s not elected.....like, say, Herman Cain.

Allen West would be perfect. The Rats have been clubbing us over the head with the “first black President” meme for years...OK, then, you want to play identity politics? Fine. Here’s a black man, a 22-year Army veteran, who is a staunch conservative and can speak rings around Obama. West is a fantastic orator and he doesn’t need a Teleprompter to do it.

Only if they really cared more about the country than their own sorry a$$es and we know that is not the case. Would be spectacular to watch the libs go crazy. I have no doubt, if given the chance, she would shine and inspire.

That really surprised me. I heard that even Boehner and McConnell abstained.

I like your thinking. What’s the rest of your administration look like?

I’m hoping for Michelle Bachmann. She has a pleasingly sharp tongue, and tends to make liberals froth.

Governor Palin would be the best choice, unifying the party.
We’re in sore need of unification.

An off- ball but productive choice would be that cable (CNBC?) financial commentator!

“They really shouldn’t give a response.”

Excellent idea. It would be like when Hussein flicked off an imaginary piece of dust from his shoulder to signify insignificance. Hussein is insignificant. His speech will be insignificant. Priebus should say, “Nobody listened; it’s impossible to prepare an appropriate response.”

Palin gave a great response on the libel attacks regarding the shooting in Arizona.

She is more a recognized face of the GOP than anyone else.

If Sarah Palin gives the rebuttal, there will be more people watching the rebuttal than the original Obama speech.

It should be an elected official... so Michelle Bachman is the answer.
