Who Will Give the GOP's State-of-the-Union Response?
The Atlantic ^ | 1-21-11 | staff

It's one of the most treasured spotlights -- and one of the most thankless tasks -- in American politics. For one night this year, a Republican will become the face of the party and offer a response to the president of the United States after he delivers the State of the Union address.

The spotlight is intense; despite the fact that the response gets a far smaller audience than the president's address, it's still watched by everyone in Washington, and by millions more around the country. It can highlight a rising star in the GOP, like last year's address in which Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell shone. Or it can be easily mocked for one outstanding feature; think of the parodies of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's performance, or of then-Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine's seemingly independent eyebrow.

The honor comes with a requirement not unlike the Hippocratic oath: Above all, just don't screw up.

Do you think the GOP old-guard would allow Palin to do it?

Ummm... we need a reprieve from Palin for a while.

Yup. We need some fresh faces. Some of those mentioned have been in our faces non-stop for too long.

Since Ryan would have Obama’s speech in hand, he needs to play off that. Obama CAN”T deal with specifics, aways sermonizes. Ryan could puncture every balloon. The main thing is to say that Obamacare has divided the country and that if the President insists on ignoring the strong opposition to it he will create even more turmoil. A leader who does not listen cannot lead.

Just announced that Ryan will do it.

Excellent!

Ryan is a smart, young, quick, summa-beach who can rip Obama's words to shreds. He'll bring a fresh toughness to the stage that many have not seen, and quite frankly, I'm weary of The Twins right now.

I thjnk Marco wants to keep a low profile. He is too young to make his move right now. He is 40 and looks 30. But what do I know.

“I’m hoping for Michelle Bachmann. She has a pleasingly sharp tongue, and tends to make liberals froth.”

I’ve gotta agree with you. Absolutely the best choice.

I heard Rubio may not join the Senate Tea Party caucus (the senate’s version of Rep. Bachmann’s house caucus).

That would be a slap in the face of the “one’s who brung him”.

Reportedly Christe turned down the opportunity.

Don't want Christie to have a platform.

He might use it as an opportunity to join the rabid anti-gun dems in their calls for more gun control after Tuscon.

Oh boy, dyslexia kicking in, (Middle, far left), not right, LOL.

Now that you got your directions fixed, I believe the man you're talking about is Justice Alito. He took a lot of crap for daring to refute Obama's slam during the speech. Clearly, he was holding a lot more inside.

I wouldn't read too much into these snapped photos--at any given moment, they can make people look drunk, sleepy, bored, etc.

They gotcha TV angles were ready to strike and Judge Alito obliged the Ministry of Propaganda, thus igniting indignation of those who were offended by the “breach” of protocol. I used “guy” in jest, since everyone should be that guy (Alito) during the next SOTU address.
