How about requiring the gas stations to list their alcohol percentages so I know where to shop and where to avoid. Ethanol contains about 30% less energy than gasoline, so 10% ethanol should drop mileage by about 3% and 15% ethanol should drop it by 4.5%.

Ethanol contains about 30% less energy than gasoline, so 10% ethanol should drop mileage by about 3%...If the efficiencies of extracting said energy were equal, which they are not. Ethanol contains less energy per unit volume, but extracts a higher percentage. It's not enough to make up the difference, but an honest comparison needs to look at more than just total amount of energy.
